From the family of a don Cossack. He received his General education in the gymnasium at Novocherkassk. He studied at the Imperial Academy of arts (1879-1887). During the years of study twice awarded small silver medals (1884, etude; 1886, for illustration). In 1887 he received the title neklassnogo (free) artist. In 1893, for the painting "the Novorossiysk Bay", "Footpath" and the other was awarded the title of class artist of 3-й degree.
