Of noble family, the son of an employee of the Department of the Ministry of Interior. He studied at the IAH (1875-1882) under Pavel Chistyakov and P. Shamshina; in 1879 attended watercolor classes in the evening in costume. In the years of study received a pensioner's contents from the State Treasury.
