from family pharmacist; brother of the painter Boris N. Yakovlev. He studied at the physico-mathematical faculty of Moscow University (since 1911). Parallel to school studio VN Meshkov (1913-1914). Studied at MUZHVZ (1913-1914) by AE Arkhipov, Korovin, SV Malyutina.

lived in Moscow. In 1927 he traveled to Paris. In 1932-1934 at the invitation of Gorky visited Italy, where he wrote his portrait. He performed the scenic cycle "Fishes of the Barents Sea" (1931-1934), "Types of Sorrento (1933).

The exhibit at the exhibitions associations "Moscow Salon" (1917-1918), TPHV (1918, 1923), "World of Art" (1921), the Union of Russian Artists (1922), the Society of Artists. AIKuindzhi (1926, 1928). Member and exhibitor AHRR (1922-1928, with interruptions). Participated in the exhibitions "Red Army" (1923), a permanent art exhibition (1926), works of art to the 10-year anniversary of the October Revolution (1928), "The building of socialism in Soviet art" (1930), «XV years, the Red Army" (1933) in Moscow, the jubilee exhibition "Artists of the RSFSR XV years in Leningrad, Moscow (1932-1934), XIV and XVI of the international art exhibition in Venice (1924, 1928), a traveling exhibition of Russian art in the United States and Canada (1924-1925) and other.

Since 1918 actively engaged in teaching activities. He taught at the State of free art workshops - Higher Art (1918-1922) as assistant SV Malyutina, at the architectural department of Civil Engineering Faculty of the Moscow Higher Technical School (late 1910's - 1920) the Moscow Architectural Institute (1934-1936), the Moscow State Art Institute. VISurikova (1948-1950).

Since 1920 worked as a restorer of paintings at Central Restoration Workshops (1924-1927), the State Museum of Fine Arts (1926-1931, Head of the Division of restoration). Supervised the restoration of the Sevastopol panorama FA Roubaud (since 1952, together with the PP Sokolov-Skalya).

In 1938-1939 and 1949-1959 served as chief artist VSHV. Twice awarded the State (Stalin) Prize of the USSR: in 1943 ( "Portrait of VN Yakovlev," "Guerrilla"), 1949 ( "kolkhoz herd"). Awarded the title People's Artist of the RSFSR (1943) and member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1947).

author of books on painting "(Moscow, 1951)," On the great Russian artists "(Moscow, 1952)," My vocation "(Moscow, 1963)," Artists, restorers, antiquarians "(Moscow, 1966). He was buried at Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.

Yakovlev works are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum and others.
