Since 1847 worked in the Drawing School of the Society for the Promotion of artists, from the same year as the gifted student received a pension of the Company. In 1848-1855 he studied at the IAH in the class of historical painting by FA Bruni. During the study received all existing academic awards: in 1852 - a small silver medal in 1853 - a large silver medal in 1854 - a small gold medal for the painting "The Court of King Solomon, in 1855 - a gold medal for the program" Children of Jacob sold their brother Joseph. In the same year he graduated from the course with the title of class artist 1-th degree and the right of a pensioner's trip abroad for six years.

In 1856-1862 - retired IAH in Rome. He visited Berlin, Dresden, Vienna. By order of President IAH Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna worked on "tremendous picture" "Last minutes of Christians condemned to be devoured by wild beasts" ( "Christian martyrs in the Coliseum), for which in 1863 was awarded an honorary associate of the Academy of the free IAH.

After returning to Russia he lived in St. Petersburg. In 1863 he created the paintings to the works of Lermontov. In mid-1860 participated in the painting of the Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Vilnius, for which God wrote the altarpiece Safaofa.

In 1866, he died of consumption, which fell ill during his pensioner's trip.

Flavitsky - one of the greatest masters of history painting the middle of XIX century in Russia, representative of academic art. Been influenced by Bruni and K. Briullov. In his works combined the features of the romantic and academic direction with realistic tendencies.

Flavitsky works are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum and the Kiev Museum of Russian Art and others.
