he Graduated from city College in Kungur and received a scholarship from the town for continued education. Studied at the Central Stroganov school of technical drawing — Central Stroganov-промышленном College (1899-1908) painting-декоративном the police Department С. В. Иванова, К. А. Коровина, К. К. Первухина, С. В. Ноаковского, Ф. О. Шехтеля, И. В. Жолтовского. Graduated with the title of "the artist industry." At the same time he worked as a draughtsman at a Wallpaper factory. In 1905 he participated in armed uprisings in Moscow. In 1908 he entered the Moscow school of painting, in 1909, for an active revolutionary activities, was arrested, up to 1911 was in prison, then sent to Kungur.

In 1913 he returned to Moscow. The summer of 1914 was spent in Norway. In 1916 she bought a house in Tarusa, where he organized workshop. Wrote thematic paintings, portraits, landscapes, still lifes; has created a number of works on themes of the revolution of 1905 and 1917, the Civil war. In 1925 he visited creative mission in the Donbass.

Performed graphic series: "1-й state ironworks" (1922), portraits of writers for publication "Gallery of modern writers" (Moscow, 1926).

In 1926-1931 — head of the artistic part of the Museum of Revolution in Moscow. Wrote articles for the magazines "Art in mass", "Art", "Young artist", reviewed books on art. Author of books and articles on art: "the Painter Sergei Vasilyevich Ivanov" (M, 1931; together with Е. А. Журавлевой), "Graphic literacy. Drawing. Atlas of drawings" (М.-Л., 1931), "Г. Г.Ряжский" (M., 1952).

One of the members-учредителей and a permanent Exhibitor AHRR — akhr (1922-1932). Member of mosskh — MSH (1932, 1944-1945 — Board member).

Since 1922 — participant of exhibitions (sketches, sketches, drawings and graphics from the life and the life working-крестьянской red Army (1-я AHRR) in Moscow). participated in many international exhibitions and exhibitions of Soviet art abroad, including a traveling exhibition of Soviet art of China and Japan (Harbin, Tokyo, Aomori, Osaka, Nagoya; 1926-1927), the exhibition artists of the akhr Art-промышленной exhibition in Cologne (1929), art-кустарной exhibition of the USSR in new-Йорке, Philadelphia, Boston, Detroit (1929), XVII international art exhibition in Venice (1930), exhibition of Soviet art in Zurich (1931) and others.

In 1956 удостоен the title of honored art worker of the RSFSR. He was buried at the city cemetery in Tarusa.

Work is represented in many Museum collections, including the State Tretyakov gallery, the State literary Museum, the State Museum of contemporary history of Russia, Central Museum of armed forces.
