Painter, graphic artist

From a family of artists. He studied at Penza art school (1901-1907) К. А. Савицкого; Higher art Institute of painting, sculpture and architecture under the Imperial Academy of arts in St. Petersburg — Petrograd (1907-1915) П. П. Чистякова. In 1915, for the painting "Susanna" received the title of artist.

he Lived in Petrograd (until 1919). Participated in the design of Petrograd to 1-й anniversary of the October revolution (1918), created a mural "Who is not with us is against us", and "All power to — to the Councils!", "Winter storm", "the Triumph of work". In 1919 he moved to Belarus and lived in Velizh, Vitebsk, 1929 — in Minsk. Created the project of the BSSR emblem (1926).

Performed a thematic paintings, portraits, landscapes. Author paintings: "Evening" (1916), "self-Portrait" (1917), "Kastus Kalinovsky" (1924), "Barricades. From the events of 1905 года in Moscow" (1925), "Portrait В. И. Ленина" (1926), "the Hammerer" (1926), "the Rafters" (1928), "the Partisans" (1928), "Portrait of the writer А. Труса" (1930), "Girl with dove" (1933), "Transfer of experience" (1937), "Speech Я. М. Свердлова at the historic meeting of the Central Committee of the Bolshevik party in 1917 году" (1940), "Minsk. 4 июля 1944 года" (1945-1955), "Universitarians" (1947), "Group portrait of leaders of the Belarusian theatre Г. П. Глебова, О. П. Марикса, В. И. Владомирского" (1959).

Performed the large painting: "the Industrialization of the USSR (the Dnieper)" and "Collectivization of agriculture (Threshing on the farm)" "for station in the village not burned (1930-1932); panels "October in Belarus" for the BSSR pavilion at VSHV (1939).

Worked in the field of book graphics; collaborated with the state publishing house of the BSSR. He drew illustrations to the books: "On the road" А. Н. Скригина "Days of revolt" А. С. Серафимовича, "a New earth" Я. Коласа (all — 1929-1930).

From 1903 — participated in exhibitions. Member of all-Belarusian Association of artists (1927-1930), the Union of artists of the USSR (1932). Exhibited: Spring in the halls of the Imperial Academy of arts (1909, 1916-1918), the society of the independent (1912), the Community of artists (1917), 1-й state free exhibition of works of art (1919) in St. Petersburg (Petrograd); all-Belarusian art exhibitions (1925, 1927, 1929, 1957, 1959), all-Belarusian exhibition of paintings, graphics, sculpture, architecture (1930), Republican art exhibitions BSSR (1960, 1963, 1964 — "On guard for peace") in Minsk; the jubilee exhibition of art of the peoples of the USSR (1927), Belarusian art (1935), "Fine arts of the BSSR" (1940), all-Union art exhibitions (1947, 1957 — "40 лет of the Komsomol", 1958, 1961), works of Belarusian artists (1949), fine arts and folk arts of the BSSR (1955), exhibition 1-му all-Union Congress of Soviet artists (1957) in Moscow. Participant of several exhibitions of Soviet art abroad: "Graphics and book art in the USSR" in Amsterdam (1929). His personal exhibitions were held in Minsk (1933, 1940, 1958).

One of the founders and a teacher at folk art school in Velizh (1919-1929); taught at the Vitebsk art school (1923-1929), children's art Studio in Minsk (1936-1940), Belarusian state theatre-художественном Institute in Minsk (1953-1964); Professor (1957). The honored worker of arts of the USSR (from 1940), people's artist of the BSSR (1955).

the artist's Father Anatoly Volkov, the grandfather of the artist-карикатуриста Sergei Volkov.

Work is represented in several Museum collections, among them — of the State Russian Museum, national art Museum of Belarus in Minsk and others.
