From a family of Russified Germans, Baron, son of state Councilor — officials of the Ministry of Finance. Was in 2nd@St. ndashй-Петербургской gymnasium (graduated in 1885), on the physico-математическом faculty of St. Petersburg University (1885-1889). In 1935 together with his family was exiled to the village of Chelkar in Kazakhstan; in 1937 he returned to Leningrad.
