From a family of Russified Germans, Baron, son of state Councilor — officials of the Ministry of Finance. Was in 2nd@St. ndashй-Петербургской gymnasium (graduated in 1885), on the physico-математическом faculty of St. Petersburg University (1885-1889). Parallel classes at the Drawing school of the Society for the encouragement of arts (the mid 1880-х), the Imperial Academy of arts (1888-1889). He continued his education at the Academy of arts in Munich (1891-1893) A. von Wagner, and private art school Ф. Кормона in Paris (1893-1894).

Lived in St. Petersburg (Petrograd, Leningrad). He painted portraits, landscapes, thematic paintings. Completed portraits: sculptor Ф. Г. Бернштама (1897), А. Э. Визель (early 1900-х, 1916), В. И. Вышнеградского (1906), the ballet master М. Петипа (1900-е), В. Н. Коковцева (1911), composers О. В. Беме, Н. А. Римского-Корсакова, А. К. Глазунова, П. И. Чайковского (1935) writer В. Я. Шишкова (1927), В. И. Ленина (1920-е; multiple options), Н. В. Плеханова; thematic paintings — "В. И. Ленин in exile" (1920-е), "А. С. Пушкин at work" (1936). Author of numerous sketches of scenes and performances of the Leningrad theaters and artists in various roles. Member of the Imperial Academy of arts (since 1912).

Exhibited in the Paris salon (1894, 1901); at the exhibitions of Moscow society of art lovers (1894), Moscow fellowship of artists (1911), the gallery Lemercier (1913) in Moscow; the Society of Russian watercolorists (1895, 1901, 1903-1905), New society of artists (1910), the exhibitions in the halls of the Imperial Academy of arts (1897, 1898, 1899, 1906, 1918), works by artists — members of the "House of art" (1921), Community of artists (1925), Society of artists to them. А. И. Куинджи (1926, 1927, 1928), at the jubilee exhibition of fine arts (1927) in St. Petersburg (Petrograd, Leningrad); 1-й traveling exhibition to Siberia in Tomsk (1903).

In 1894-1924 —, the curator of the Museum of the Academy of arts; in 1928-1921 — assistant curator of the Hermitage. Member of the Board of the State Hermitage and the State Russian Museum. Participated in the organization of the art Department of the Russian pavilion at the World exhibition in Paris (1900; awarded the Legion of Honor) and Brussels (1910), international exhibitions in Munich (1901), Rome (1911), Turin and Breslau (1913). In the early 1920-х — expert on Russian and Western European paintings in theCommission when the Museum Department Glavnauka.

In 1935 together with his family was exiled to the village of Chelkar in Kazakhstan; in 1937 he returned to Leningrad.

Exhibition of works was in Leningrad (1966, 100-летию birthday).

Work is represented in many Museum collections, among them — State Hermitage Museum, State Tretyakov gallery, Russian Museum А. С. Пушкина St-Петербургский state Museum of theatre and music, State Museum of fine arts of the Republic of Tatarstan in Kazan and other.
