Of the petty-bourgeois family. He studied at the Imperial Academy of arts (1876-1882) Б. П. Виллевальде, М. П. Клодта. He was awarded small silver medals (1879, 1881).

Lived in St.-Петербурге (Petrograd, Leningrad). Drew for illustrated magazines "Pictorial review" (1878), "Niva" (1879-1880), "Dragonfly" (1885), "the Jester" (1886-1887), "Fragments" (1885, 1889-1890), and others. One of the organizers and illustrators magazine "Goblin" (1906). Illustrated books for publishing houses in St. Petersburg: "Actea: a tale from ancient Roman and Greek civilization" Е. А. Сысоевой (1884), "Our morals" И. Ф. Василевского (1884, in collaboration with other artists), "Pushkin in pictures" (1885, album), "Modest achievements" В. И. Немировича-Данченко (1891, in collaboration with other artists), "Mother" Г.-Х. Андерсена (1894), "the Caucasian tales" (1894) and "Across the Black sea to the Bosphorus. Travel notes" П. П. Гнедича (1896), "Dead souls" Н. В. Гоголя (1901, in collaboration with other artists).

Created a series of easel lithographs based on the novel "Anna Karenina" (1892) and the story "Kholstomer" (1890-е) Л. Н. Толстого.

Performed landscapes, portraits. Author of painting works: "the Blossoming may" (1918), "the skerries" (1920), "Last snow" (1921), "May" (1928). The author of graphic portraits (lithograph): Л. Н. Толстого (1892), П. И. Чайковского (1892), А. С. Суворина, В. И. Ленина (1918, 1924); in 1923-1926 создал a number of portraits of figures of the October revolution.

In 1916-1921 — Department head of makeup in all state theatres; executed drawings of makeup for the actors of the Alexandrinsky theatre.
