studied in 2-nd Moscow military school, then - in the 1-m Pavlovsk Military School. In 1878 he released the rank of lieutenant. At the end of 1880 was assigned to the St. Petersburg fortress artillery.

Since the early 1880's as a "foreign" students attended classes IAH. For student work often celebrated with medals: in 1882, 1884 and 1885 - small silver in 1883 - a large silver in 1886 - a small gold for the painting "The episode of the Battle of Ostrołęka in 1831," in 1887 - a large gold for the program "Attack of Lubenskiy hussars Circassians in the village Haydarskoy campaign in 1877. In the same year, released from the Academy with the rank of class artist of degree 1 and the right of a pensioner's travel abroad.
