From the family of a retired military man. Studied in Elisavetgrad Zemsky real school (1880-1887, did not graduate). In 1887 за part in the people's will movement was arrested, was in prison Elisavetgrad and Moscow, then exiled to Eastern Siberia (Verkhneudinsk, Troitskosavsk ). In the macropoker collected geological collection, made of ethnographic sketches, led, weather observations; met a well-known researcher of Central Asia Г. Н. Потаниным; with his assistance, he entered the photo Studio Н. А. Чарушина in Troitskosavsk. Was a painter and photographer Orkhon expedition В. В. Радлова in Mongolia (1891), on the petition В. В. Радлова was pardoned and moved to St. Petersburg.

Lived in St. Petersburg. Worked as a landscape painter, genre painter. The author of the paintings are: "On prayer", "house", "the Door in the mosque of Shah-и-Зинда", "Dowani", "temple", "Dead water", "the Entrance to the mosque of the blind in Samarkand", "the Pond near the mosque," "From the old life of the East", a "Dormant model", "beach front", "Model", "Street in Samarkand", "the pupil of the madrasah of Shah-и-Зинда", "Tibba", "Legend", "Tonight in Samarkand", "In the Studio" (all — 1900-е), "Oriental landscape", "Before the bath", "Oriental dancer", "the Forest in Finland", "Spruce grove. Finland" (all — 1910-е).

Participated in the Spring exhibitions in the halls of the Imperial Academy of arts (1901 – 1917), 1-й State free exhibition of works of art (1919), exhibition of Petrograd artists of all directions (1923) in St. Petersburg (Petrograd); the Spring exhibition in the halls of the Stroganov school (1903), St. Petersburg spring exhibitions in the gallery Lemercier (1910, 1913) in Moscow.

he Participated in the expeditions В. В. Бартольда in Turkestan (1893), the Russian Committee for studying Central and Eastern Asia in Samarkand (1905 – 1907), С. Ф. Ольденбурга in Eastern Turkestan (1909 – 1910) and Western China (1914 – 1915) and other; made several independent trips to Central Asia to study the art. Collaborated with the Ethnographic Department of the Russian Museum. Performed numerous sketches of scenes of national life, monuments, ornaments, doing photo-фиксацией architectural monuments. The founder of scientific ethnographic photography in Russia. Has an important collection of Oriental ceramics. Held an exhibition of photographs taken on expeditions in the halls of the Academy of Sciences (1906).

In 1893 – 1928 работал in the Ethnographic Museum of the Academy of Sciences (the Museum of anthropology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR), 1911 — head of the workshop since 1914 — scientist curator of the Department of Eastern and Western Turkestan, head of Department images and crappy-модельной workshop. The author of several books and articles on Buddhist and Islamic art of Middle and Central Asia.

Creative work is presented in the State Russian Museum, Science-исследовательском Museum of the Russian Academy of arts, Russian Museum of Ethnography, Samarkand state United historical-архитектурном and art Museum-заповеднике.
