the exhibition "the Peredvizhniki and the Impressionists. On the way to the twentieth century" prepared for the XXXVII International music festival "December nights of Sviatoslav Richter". Traditionally, the curator of the project is the President of the Pushkin Museum. A. S. Pushkin Irina Antonova. The exhibition is part of a multi-year exhibition strategy of the Museum, based on dialogue between Western and Russian art. In a single exhibition space presents outstanding works of the Peredvizhniki and the Impressionists from the collections of major museums in Russia, compared two of the greatest phenomenon in the artistic culture of the XIX century. Artistic views and style of works of the Peredvizhniki and the Impressionists are often at odds, but they can find surprising Parallels and points of contact.
the exhibition includes about 80 works. Among them are the works of artists of XIX–XX centuries, paintings and graphic works by French and Russian artists from the collection of the Pushkin Museum. A. S. Pushkin, the works of the Wanderers from the collection of the State Tretyakov gallery, the State Russian Museum in Saint-Петербурге and other museums.

On the way to the twentieth century" — scientific publication of the largest art historian Nina Alexandrovna Dmitrieva (1917-2003). The scientific approach is the desire to see Russian art in a global context, to show its uniqueness and its place among the other European schools. The article "the Peredvizhniki and the Impressionists" was a result of reflections on the formation in France and in Russia generation of artists with different ideologies and Outlook, but inspired by the fight against academicism and in various ways came to the solution of similar tasks.
Curatorial group, following the original idea of the researcher, creating space Museum is a real reflection of a single cultural process, shows the General background of the artistic life of Russia and France of the last quarter of the nineteenth century and relates two significant effects on the example of their most prominent representatives. In the exhibition the viewer will see a comparison of the paintings of Edouard Manet and paintings by Ilya Repin and Vladimir Makovsky, Alfred Sisley and Alexei Savrasov, Valentin Serov and Pablo Picasso, Nikolai Yaroshenko and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Mikhail Vrubel, Henri de Toulouse-Лотрека.
In the halls of the exhibition also presents the works of famous post-Impressionists — Paul cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin. These wizards were not United by a commonprogram or artistic method, but were contemporaries of the Impressionists, their "disciples."

On the way to the twentieth century" continues a series of projects on aspects of mutual influences, Parallels and dialogues in the work of artists of different eras and countries. Among the most striking examples of such exhibitions: "Moscow — Paris. 1900-1930" (1982), "Moscow — Berlin. 1900-1950" (1996), "Russia — Italy. Down through the ages. From Giotto to Malevich" (2005), "Voices of an imaginary Museum of Andre Malraux" (2016-2017).
Program music festival "December nights of Sviatoslav Richter" 2017 continues the main theme of the exhibition. The concerts will include works by Camille Saint-Санса, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel who used it in his work style and the aesthetics of impressionism. In comparison with the works of French composers will be performed music by modest Musorgsky, Aleksandr Skryabin, Igor Stravinsky and others.
