Astrakhan collection brothers Sapozhnikovykh: restoration and research
The center Grabar comfortable in their own week-long exhibition of artifacts from the Astrakhan art gallery, have been restored in the Grabar centre in 2016-2017
Exhibition in the Centre behalf Grabar presents paintings and print graphics of the XVIII—XIX centuries from the family collection of the Astrakhan merchants-миллионеров, fishery managers, large patrons of pre-revolutionary time brothers Sapozhnikovykh. In 1919 part of the collection is located in the Astrakhan art gallery named after Space. The exhibition presents six portraits of family members Sapozhnikovykh and four engravings depicting major battles of the Northern war.
Sapojnikova — is one of the largest and richest industrial dynasties of the Russian Empire. In the mid-nineteenth century, the company "Brothers Sapozhnikovy" owned 12 fishing in the Astrakhan province, they owned 8 of the 12 ships and barges carrying cargoes on the Volga. They built churches and established educational institutions participated in different areas of city and provincial life.
to Collect art in the early nineteenth century was the founder of the dynasty and family business Volsky merchant-старообрядец Peter S. shoemaker (1762-1828). His descendants for a century has been adding to the family collection. From surviving documents it is known that in 1827 the collection was already 25 of the paintings of the Flemish school, 17th — Italian, 30 — German, including works Barocci, Titian, Poussin, Lebrun, Rubens, van-Дейка, Ostade, and other eminent European masters. The gem of the collection was "Madonna with flower" by Leonardo da Vinci, known as the "Madonna Benois", — purchased from the heirs of General of artillery, Senator Alexey Ivanovich Korsakov; in 1914 it was sold to the Imperial Hermitage Maria Alexandrovna Benois, nee Sapozhnikova, wife of the court architect Leonty Benois. Painting collection, along with sculptures and tapestries, adorned St. Petersburg left from Italy on the promenade des Anglais, as well as Astrakhan estate. Built in the style of Alexander's Empire, with columns, Belvedere and orangery, it caused excitement among famous travelers who visited Astrakhan. At different times from Sapozhnikovykh stayed writers Ivan Aksakov, Alexander Dumas (father), scientist-естествоиспытатель Carl Baer.
