In the Pushkin Museum on 31 January opens the exhibition of contemporary Japanese photographer yasumasa Morimura. The exhibition will be 80 works

State Museum of fine arts named after as Pushkin presents the exhibition contemporary Japanese artist yasumasa Morimura, dedicated to the history of a self-portrait in the art world. Will feature more than 80 works from the collection of the National Museum of art Osaka, the Museum of contemporary art Hara in Tokyo, the National Museum of modern art in Kyoto, and from the collection of the author.

the Exhibition consists of several parts: the first part called "When I knew nothing about art history," includes photos from the personal archive of the artist, two early works, 1985 — "Portrait. Van Gogh and Portrait. Camille rulen", as well as a large multi-figure composition "Symposium: self-portraits", which presents many characters of his reincarnations. In the second section — "History of art-portraits" — exhibited works created in 2016: portraits of Leonardo da Vinci, Durer, van Eyck, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Courbet, Bocklin, Ensor, van Gogh, Rousseau, Magritte, Dali. Not only the artistic interpretation of the characters but also the author names are an integral part of the intent of the photographer. Mexican artist Frida Kahlo has a dedicated section called "an Inner dialogue with Frida Kahlo". The whole hall is a cycle dedicated to the famous painting "Las Meninas" the famous Spanish artist of the seventeenth century by Diego velázquez. In the hall, "the twentieth century — century of self" viewers will be able to see the original interpretation of the theme of the works of Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman.

a Large series of the Morimura "faces of Rembrandt" shows the author's reading of the painterly self-portraits of the great Dutchman. Photographs inspired by Rembrandt's etchings will be displayed in the Main Museum building (Italian courtyard). There are 12 works in the series "New "Caprichos"," created on motives of famous series of etchings by Francisco Goya.

Japanese artist involved in the processes of globalization, trying to analyze tendencies of development of art, to rethink the importance and place of traditional values in the modern world.

yasumasa Morimura born 1951 in Osaka (Japan). In the global art scene emerged in the early 1980-х. In the first photo, he was reincarnated in the characters of modern mass culture and artists of different eras. Morimura acts as both a model and the author of the concept. Throughout his creative path, he has created alreadymore than 300 different images and characters. To date, yasumasa Morimura — is the most famous Japanese artist working in the genre of appropriation (appropriation).

In the framework of the exhibition "Morimura Yasumasa. History self-portrait" in Museum prepared an educational program that includes meetings with the artist and curator of the exhibition, as well as lectures on contemporary art of Japan.
