a Collection of prints by Goya will be presented from the collection of the Pushkin Museum, and the series "Caprichos de Goya", created by Salvador Dali — from collection of Boris Fridman. Reprints of the XIX century, with original boards 1799 was made Goya etchings with aquatint. Works by Salvador Dali executed in the techniques of etching, dry-point and pochoir and print on top of heliogravure with original etchings by Goya.
To each pair of sheets of Goya and Dali is a review of Goya. Thus, the exposition is a literary text (comments Goya) and illustrations (etchings of Goya and Dali). This design exhibition will allow the viewer to better understand what made artists, feel the modern sounding works of art created over two hundred years ago and continued in the twentieth century.
One of the vertices of the graphic art of Francisco Goya is the creation of a series of etchings "Caprichos". Caprichos (ital. capricci; FR. caprices; use caprichos) — a special genre has developed in the art of Western Europe at the turn of XVI–XVII centuries, involving the creation in the fine arts, music or poetry, a series of whims, fads or fantasies, one-либо topic.
the First sketches of the series of the "Caprichos" the artist created in 1793. The final series of drawings were issued to them in 1799. Goya himself called the series "a Collection of prints by the imaginative stories."
All the subjects of the series "Caprichos" talk about contemporary artists and the realities of political and social life of Spain, which is experiencing the period of deep crisis. Another story of the series is the story of happy and tragic love of the painter to the Duchess of Alba Caetano. In his works he is a critic of public morality, consistently revealing the hidden meaning of reality and destroying the existing foundations of the old world. Among the story lines that he develops, one can distinguish self-deception and hypocrisy, women's levity and misery, the metaphor of the human world like the animal, the sleep of reason and the awakening of human consciousness. Goya ridiculed Spain and sarcastically evil: the vices of the common people, the hypocrisy of the nobility, the court circles of the ruling couple, the Church, the Inquisition.
the Complex graphic design of a series of 80 etchings demanded a longer review. The first was given by Goya. On one of the albums, donated to the king by the artist, was his ownpen made additional clarifications to each of the sheets. This so-called "official review" Goya from the album stored in the Prado Museum, is the basis of most modern publications "Caprichos". In the framework of this exhibition made a new translation into Russian language of all the comments Goya etchings, to the graphic series. To gain a deeper understanding created by the artist, consider this series should, together with his comments.
Nearly 180 years after the publication of the graphic series of Francisco Goya his countryman Salvador Dali, one of the brightest representatives of the direction of surrealism in twentieth-century art, presented her reading of the contents and meanings of the etchings created by Goya. Dali perceived the leaves of the "Caprichos" as what-то close their own surreal method.
based on a series of 80 etchings by Goya, reproduced in heliogravure technique specifically for this work, the artist introduces into the image Goya additional characters, details and colorful elements using the technique of dry needle, etching and pochoir. In some cases he alters the characters in the prints of Goya, in other — adds its actors. Dali creates new meanings, giving the entire series a different kind and character. Painting something in the background, depicting the famous "soggy" watch or backup, the artist puts the characters of Goya in their space. Sometimes he just follows the images of Goya, not interfering neither in the image nor in the semantic component signatures, using only paint. Or so he says works of Goya, or engages his characters in his play, and sometimes enters into dialogue with his great compatriot.
the principal feature of the work of Dali's graphic series is the replacement of all items of image data by Goya, are the comments made by Dali, which is not so much explain the subject matter as asked by another line of interpretation, complementing fantasies Goya's visions of surreal Dali who almost two centuries later in a kind of dialogue with the great predecessor. In the exhibition and accompanying publication for the first time provides a translation to Russian language items, the data Given. The mystery of Francisco Goya Salvador Dalí added his own.
Like the "Caprichos" Goya, Dali series begins with a self-portrait of Goya. Dali puts it in a reduced form within the figure of the Sphinx, lying in the background of a desert landscape. From the body of the Sphinx opens the box with the winds, and in the background looms the profile black silhouette in the ancient Spanish costume. Eyes of the Sphinx closed, which reinforces the impression of a dream that Dali puts all the images. The Sphinx he symbolizes the mystery and solved in the traditional manner of the artist smooth tonal study creates the effect of a watercolor, the contours of the figures are outlined with a thin line@the semicolon eyes closed — he sleeps, he dreams about how this worldborn in the mind of Goya.
