The stars don't fall, the stars wander...
Graphics Anatoly Kaplan and Gregory Zlatogorova sculpture in the gallery "vellum"
the Gallery "vellum" is from 26 may to 5 June 2016, the new exhibition project "Stars don't fall, the stars wander". The exhibition includes rare graphic works of the classic of Soviet art of Anatoly Kaplan and sculptures to modern author Gregory Zlatogorova. Kaplan and Zlatogorov like the characters in Sholem-Алейхема, out of the everyday and the flashing days extract a miracle of love and the magic art of turning impossible dreams into reality, giving hope that happiness is possible and here — on earth, under this sky...
Kaplan was a recognized and even famous Jewish artist in the Soviet years, when national traditions were not encouraged in the art. Our contemporary Zlatogorov clearly continues the literary scope of the work of Kaplan, surviving through creativity the lives and characters of Jewish writers, arraying them in the individual, partly fabulous shape. For both of them the fragility of peace — Jewish, shtetl, perfect, missing in World war II, — the subject of fantasies and reconstructions. Both are looking for Paradise lost. And find it perfect in the past, with hull on Saturday and a goat by the fence. The idea of the exhibition is to show how contemporary sculptor skillfully continues the tradition of the classics.
Anatoly (Tanhum) Kaplan had lived a long life. He was born in the Belarusian town Rogachev in 1902 and died in Leningrad in 1980-м. Worked in your town at the farm, painting signs, studied in Petrograd — in the Leningrad VHUTEINe at G. verey and A. Rylov. According to the researchers, in his work harmoniously combined, sorapis two traditions of world art of the early twentieth century: the phenomenon of the avant-garde and the text-centered culture of Eastern European Jews. Here — love Kaplan to illustrating texts, whether classic Yiddish-литературы (Sholom-Алейхем "Tevye-молочник", "Stempen"; Mendel, mayher-Сфорим "fishke the Lame"), or folk tales. Hence the underlined "lettrism" his graphic and pictorial works: the image Kaplan — in light of the early sketches of native life Rogacheva, and late in deep philosophical reflections on the fate of the people and their language — is always filled with sentences or individual abbreviations in Yiddish, Hebrew or Russian.
Sculptor and graphic artist Gregory Zlatogorova (1965) inspired by the ideas and themes of the shtetl, urban culture of the Jews of the late NINETEENTH — beginning of the twentieth century, and inspired by the stories of Sholom-Алейхема, and graphics by Chagall, Kaplan and other Jewish classics of painting. The artist transforms these images into sculptural plastic chamber — in bronze and stone Paradise, and "the Gift", "Jacob's Dream", "Noah", "Saturday", etc.). The finest attention to detail inherent in all creativity Zlatogorova, makes the images of decorative rich, diverse.
the title of the exhibition of Kaplan and Zlatogorova "Stars don't fall, the stars wander..." refers to the work of the Mature period of creativity Sholom-Алейхема "Wandering stars".
"the Stars don't fall, they wander, —wrote Sholom-Алейхем. — Each star — is the soul of man. And where the soul goes, there goes man".
the Exhibition is open daily from 11:00 to 21:00. Admission is free.
