In the Engineering building of the State Tretyakov gallery on April 23, opened the exhibition "From Elizabeth to Victoria. English portrait from the collection of the National portrait gallery, London". The exhibition is held in the framework of the Year of language and literature of great Britain and Russia 2016.

"From Elizabeth to Victoria" — exhibition-подарок from London's National portrait gallery for the anniversary of the Tretyakov gallery. Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov largely relied on the experience of the National portrait gallery and the writings of its ideologue Thomas Carlyle, creating her portrait gallery "of persons dear nation".

Exhibition of London brings together 49 of portraits of iconic figures in British history and culture, names that are familiar to us from the school curriculum. The exhibition will present a panorama of the development of English portraiture for over 300 years.
These works give an impulse for reflection about the value of individuality and the importance of the efforts of a particular person in history and culture. The exposition is based on chronological order. Inside time sections allocated to the thematic group: statesmen, scientists, explorers, writers, actors, artists.

In the first room you can see the famous lifetime portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, the so-called "Portrait of Dicle". On this canvas painted by Marcus Gerardi Junior Elizabeth stands on a map of England. Placed in the right side of the sonnet Queen is called "lady of light". Portrait of William Shakespeare — first work, presented to the National portrait gallery in 1856, on the occasion of its Foundation, for all the time he's barely left the exhibition halls.

In the second and third halls represented the image of Admiral Horatio Nelson (1800, W. Beachy), a portrait of the famous courtesan kitty Fisher (1765, N. Hawn) and dramatized portrait of Lord Byron (1835, Phillips). On an unusual double portrait — images of Joseph Chamberlain and Arthur Balfour (CA. 1895, by S. P. Hall), the leaders of the two warring political parties. A portrait of Charles Darwin (1883, J. Collier), which was donated to the Museum by the eldest son of the scientist. The way Jerome K. Jerome (CA. 1889, S. J. Solomon) was created at a time when the writer was working on his most famous book — "Three men in a boat, not counting the dog".

It will be dedicated to key figures in British history. The programme of lectures covers a wide range of topics: the history of English neomercazoe culture, travel texts of Shakespeare around the world, the role of women in the eighteenth century and the emergence of feminism, the life of James cook and the development of Britain as a sea power, Darwin's theory, the political satire of William Hogarth and Lawrence stern, the literary legacy of Charles Dickens and the confrontation between Charles I and John Milton.
