" Fashion Pictures " were modern analogue of glossy magazines .

However, this role was not limited to fashion pictures . These prints, often performed by professional artists - real works of graphic art. They were stored , they were decorated rooms, ladies' boudoirs , interiors fashion ateliers and shops. In the XIX century originated collection " fashion pictures" , especially popular among artists , often finds in them a source of inspiration (it is known that the owners of trendy collections of engravings were Russian artists KA Somov , Alexander Benois , Mikhail Mikhail Larionov and others ).

The State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg has a collection of "sexy pictures" , chronologically covering the period from the late 1820s to the 1910s - more than 250 sheets. The exhibition presents the best part of the collection , which allows to trace the main trends in the development of European fashion , as well as the genre of fashion pictures - from a simple image lady or gentleman in the fashionable suit on a neutral background to the subject compositions with details transmitted interior details or features of the landscape .

basis of the exhibition make French engravings 1840s magazine : «La Mode», «Le Moniteur de la Mode», «Le Bon Ton», «Petit Courrier des Dames» and others. They collaborated known writers O. de Balzac, Mérimée , George Sand , E. Xu and famous artists P. Gavarnie , KO Verne Sr., J. David . Its mark in the history of fashion illustration left women artists : A. Tuduz , L. Noel , E. Leluar - famous sisters Colas, F. de Klomesnil etc. These masters , many of whom were participants in the Paris Salon and exhibited as portraitists and illustrators of books, created a new type of fashion illustration.
