In 1819-1821 Pavel Mikhailov (1786-1840) participated in the famous expedition of FF Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev, who opened the sixth continent - Antarctica, and in 1826-1829 - an expedition MN Stanyukovicha and Litke, aimed to explore the coast of the Bering Sea and Central Pacific Ocean. Many of the drawings have survived copyright line, often with the exact date and geographical coordinates, which allows not only to "build" the drawings according to the route of travel, but it is a documentary proof of priority of Russian researchers in the discovery of Antarctica.

The exhibition includes about a hundred drawings and watercolors Pavel Mikhailov from the Russian Museum, which has unique collection of graphic works by the artist. These works, created during the circumnavigation expeditions of great interest to specialists in different areas - art historians, anthropologists, geographers. Connection of artistic and scientific principles in the drawings make it a wonderful and still popular monument of Russian culture of the first third of the XIX century. Proceedings of the first expedition in the exhibition are complemented lithographs from the Atlas to the "Voyage of Captain Bellingshausen in the Southern Arctic Ocean and around the world during 1819, 1820 and 1821's" as well as items brought expedition of FF Bellingshausen.
