Family Leonid Romanovich was closely related to the Tretyakov Gallery. His father worked as a restorer before the war, and the family lived in a wing of his relatives Gallery Fedorov, hereditary restorers, the eldest of whom, Alex Kupriyanovich, began working in the gallery when Pavel Tretyakov. Astafiev rose yard Gallery, and its facilities and restoration workshops were for him everyday, but fascinating reality.

In 1948, the artist went to the Moscow Regional Art School "Memory 1905". His interests were very wide, and a separate milestone came hobby art of ballet. He represented the Gallery at the State Commission for certification of the restorers of the Ministry of Culture. first solo exhibition of Leonid Astafieva held after his death in 2005 in the halls of the Tretyakov Gallery, and then he has held exhibitions in 2006 Dolgoprudny in Historical and Art Museum, the State Memorial History, Art and Natural Museum Polenov, and in 2009 - at the State Darwin Museum in conjunction with ceramic artist NN Polyana.
