In the Kaliningrad Art Gallery opens exhibition « Marc Chagall . Bible stories. " The exhibition presents one of the major graphic series of the great artist - his illustrations to the Bible. 76 demonstrated lithographs come from private collections in Germany.

The exhibition is accompanied by music specially written for her by composer Roman Ryazantsev. Despite considerable interest in the creation of Marc Chagall in the world, this series is little known for a wide range of audience. In the museum collections of Russia works in this series are not represented at all.

Then the customer project was invited to France, Chagall's famous Paris art dealer, collector and publisher Ambroise Vollard. But, in the words of Marc Chagall, to implement plan he had to touch the living reality behind the ancient text. In 1931 the artist made a journey on the "biblical" countries, spent several months in Palestine, Syria and Egypt. Impressions from the journey that the artist has described as "the strongest in his life, served as the impetus for the creation of 39 gouaches and then, partly based on them, a series of 105 etchings, completed already in the postwar years. However, books are planned to release Ambroise Vollard, and have remained unpublished. Vollard himself died, World War II began.

In 1950 Chagall returned to the biblical illustrations, referring to the technique of black and white and color lithographs, as consistent with his picturesque manner. By 1960 a new large series of illustrations to the Old Testament. These works, most of which are included in the exhibit are a kind of foundation for a huge loop, over which the artist has worked throughout his life. Prints, drawings and paintings, stained glass and tapestries, ceramic sculptures and reliefs, inspired by the Bible, were eventually a huge "Biblical Message" by Marc Chagall.
