William Carrick was born in Edinburgh (Scotland) but as early as age was brought by parents in Russia. In 1853 he received the Imperial Academy of Arts title "neklassnogo artist with the right to make the structure, then lived in Rome (until 1856), perfected the technique of watercolor painting and getting acquainted with photography, rapidly coming into fashion. Since 1876 Carrick had title of photographer of the Imperial Academy of Arts, was a member of the Division of photography of the Imperial Russian Technical Society.
