will be represented by icons of the second half of XIX - early XX century, prevail in the territory of the Gomel and adjacent to the Bryansk and Chernihiv regions. The exhibition will complement the subjects of ethnography: rushnyk, folk costume, - giving the opportunity to create the environment in which the icon prevail, and with which it is inextricably linked.

7 November, 1919 in Gomel Palace, formerly belonged to the princes Paskevich, were discovered by the first museum exhibit based on the collection of paintings, decorative art, cold, and Firearms, family relics of former owners. Since its inception, the museum several times changed its name and theme exhibits, was the formation of new collections, one of which is provided at the collection of traditional iconography.

People's icon or «people's Naiv» was widely distributed in the Gomel region in the XVIII - early XX century. This determines the demand and popularity of traditional icons.

Interested in popular iconography emerged relatively recently. The massive flow of the museum occurred in 1980-90's and is linked to the value of this kind of cult objects in the context of cultural heritage in general and popular culture in particular.
