From 4 to 19 April 2009 in the halls of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts (Prechistenka, 21) will be the opening of the exhibition «Laboratory prints» from the collections of the Picture Gallery of the University of Concepción, Chile.
The exhibition presents the work of the greatest engravers in the history of Chilean art. On display are 35 etchings, executed in various techniques. They illustrate the development of the graphic arts in Chile starting in 1950 the twentieth century to the present day.
Engraving as a work of art emerged in Chile in the second half of the nineteenth century and grew out of folk art. In those times, poets in the soft sheets of paper recording their poems, stories about current events epoch, followed by unknown artists, the texts were accompanied by engravings on wood. In 1931, when the School of Applied Arts was established graphic arts studio, the first Chilean engravers. Later founded «Studio 99», which gave a tour of such masters of the genre, as Jaime Cruz, Pedro Millar, Santos Chavez, Leah Kleiner, Eduardo Vilchez, Nemesio Antunes and Roser Brue, of whose works can be found at this exhibition. Since then print as a kind of graphic art in the country has become increasingly popular.
Masters of the old school, along with the younger generation of engravers - graduates of Chilean universities actively promote this kind of art. Since the second half of the twentieth century, Chile was able to make a significant breakthrough in the technique of engraving.
Art Gallery, University of Concepción museum continues to develop its activities aimed at the preservation and promotion of Chilean visual arts.
