In St. Petersburg the Hermitage an exhibition of German paintings from the collection of the Dresden gallery of new artists
The State Hermitage Museum hosts exhibition «From Friedrich to Dix. German Paintings from Dresden gallery new masters ».
Gallery of the new masters of the State owned art collections of Dresden, has about two and a half thousand paintings of artists of XIX and XX centuries and is one of the largest collections of contemporary art in Germany. The gallery uses the work of renowned German and foreign artists who worked in a variety of trends and tendencies, such as Caspar David Friedrich, Otto Dix, Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Paul Klee, Edvard Munch.
museum suffered during the floods of 2002 and it had to be closed for capital reconstruction. But the masterpieces were not clean in the store, and decided to organize a visiting exhibit.
In the exhibit, which can be seen in the Hermitage, includes fifty paintings. This is a retrospective of German art for half a century, from the beginning of the XIX century to the 40-ies of XX century. Among the most valuable paintings - «Crossing of the Elbe» Ludwig Richter, «Two contemplate the moon» Caspar Friedrich, «warning» Karl Hofer. Critics argue that in Russia such a large-scale exhibition of German art was not half a century.
Martin Roth, Director of State Art Collections Dresden, explained: «We can say that this exhibition is a Russian view of German art of the past two centuries. This view of Russian curators, curators of the Hermitage. They very carefully, very carefully picked up the key pieces that are presented here ».

German painting from the gallery of the new masters of Dresden »organized in a token of gratitude and appreciation for the return of works of art, which after the Second World War were taken to the USSR and in the years 1956-1958 returned to the museum. In addition, this is yet another contribution to the development of multi-year relationship between the two museums.
In addition to St. Petersburg, works from the Dresden collection is scheduled to show at the National Museum of Kiev, the Prado Museum in Madrid and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
