Today, the London Tate Modern Gallery opens exhibition of works by American artist of Latvian origin Mark Rothko (Mark Rothko - real name Markus Rotkovits, 1903-1970 ), which is considered one of the most prominent post-war painters. The focus of the exhibition will be on later works, executed during the period from 1958 to 1970.

From September 26, 2008 to 1 February 2009, visitors can see some 50 paintings and graphic works. Among them, particular attention should be paid 15 decorative panels for Sigrem-Building for the first time will be displayed together. The nine paintings from the Tate collection (known as «Rothko Room») will be complemented by other work, also written for Sigrem, but stored in the collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Kawamura Memorial Art Museum. The latter for the first time, after the accession of these works to their collection in the late 1980's, will provide them for display at the exhibition.

Panno for Sigrem-building will be displayed along with other landmark works of Rothko, such as a series «Black forms» (1964), a group of large-scale graphic works «Brown on a gray» (1969), as well as some samples of his recent series «Black on Gray» (1969-1970).

In 1958, Rothko painting offered to perform for decorating the walls of one of the halls of the restaurant «Four Seasons». This facility located on the first floor of the corporate buildings of Seagram distillers - the then most recently built project Misa Ludwig van der Rohe (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe) and Phillip Johnson (Philip Johnson). In his studio Rothko put wood to create a rough imitation of the restaurant. Initially under the order required that the Rothko created a total of seven paintings, but in the end wrote on 30 canvases.

At the later stage of the creative ways Rothko bright, saturated colors over the early works give way to the dark color of red, brown and black. At that time, Rothko became aware that his later works are in need of a new environment different from that for which they were created. He believed that painting for building-Sigrem - objects for contemplation, which should completely absorb the viewer. He compared them to the works of Michelangelo in Lavrentiyskoy Library in Florence, creating a depressing atmosphere of isolation. Rothko said that Michelangelo «has exactly those feelings, that I want - to make viewers feel that they are forced into the trap of zamurovannymi windows and doors». Then he decided to abandon this order for a restaurant.

Shortly before his death in 1970, Rothko passed nine panels, destined for «Four Seasons», UK Tate Gallery, as he himself said, he was passionate about the museum collection, and in particular the work of J. M. U . Turner. The works of Rothko exhibited, according to the request of the artist, as a whole exhibit that reveals their deep, meditative essence.

The exhibition was prepared in cooperation with the Kawamura Memorial Art Museum. In spring 2009, she went to Japan.
