The streets of Berlin in the works of the prominent German artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner presents Museum of Modern Art in New York
In the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) hosts an outstanding exhibition of German expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (Ernst Ludwig Kirchner). The exhibition, entitled «Kirchner and the Berlin Street» includes work done in 1913-1915 of the artist: seven paintings, and drawings, lithographs and etchings, who first exhibited together. Work on a series of works by Kirchner, began shortly after his move in 1911 from the power of Dresden in boiling lives Berlin, who was then the cultural capital of Germany and the third largest city in Europe.
Kirchner sees urban life is quite tough. His Berlin, unlike the Impressionists of Paris does not like the city of quiet walks on the spacious boulevard. For him, it is rather a place where people are in constant motion, they simply «presses» to each other ... Berlin's urban landscape in the works of Kirchner lack of recognition: of all the paintings exhibited at MoMA in the work «Potsdamer Platz» (Potsdamer Platz, 1914) from the Berlin National Gallery, you can find a seat. Kirchner is not so much interested in the street, how many people who fill them. And the protagonists of his works are mostly young women of easy virtue, which at that time could be found on the streets of Berlin very often. Some of them even appear in the clothes of widows who lost husbands in the First World War. Men for the most part, neglected the long-range plan and a faceless figure in black cloak and high hat.
In addition to paintings on the Berlin, the exhibition includes works on paper and earlier works by the artist from the MoMA collection with images of street scenes of Dresden. This allows us to trace changes in the style of the artist after moving to Berlin. The clear, rounded forms are replaced by rigid, angular faces. You can see how the sketches made in haste and repent on the spot, then continued to receive the drawings, lithographs and etchings.
