The basis of the Irkutsk Museum of Art Gallery by Vladimir Platonovich Sukachev (1848-1920), a public figure, mayor, patron of the arts. Influential irkutchanin acquire works of Russian painting school in the academic exhibitions and auctions in St. Petersburg in 1870's - early 1900-ies. In his house in the early 1880's he opened the first in Siberia in Russia and the other private art gallery, which was bequeathed Irkutsk. In 1920, a private gallery Sukachev, comprising about one hundred paintings, became the state property within the Irkutsk Scientific museum and a half decades existed as a department of the museum.
an important purchase the museum in 1920 became the «Ural Collection» Kazantseva eminent merchants, which included an excellent school Stroganov icons, rare books, a collection of works by Russian artists, as well as a collection of Oriental art from the East-Siberian Department of Russian Geographical public works of the masters of China, Mongolia and Japan.
For the exhibition at the Tretyakov Gallery selected approximately seventy first-class exhibits of the museum's permanent exhibition. Among them - the best examples of the iconography of Siberian XVII - XVIII centuries, the beginning of the XVIII century parsuny «Portrait Ermak» and «Portrait of king John V Aleckseievich». The exhibition illustrates the rare examples of wooden sculpture of a church ( «The Virgin and John the Evangelist, coming to the Crucifixion», XVIII century), representing the northern tradition.
A great part of an exhibition of canvases by local artists took the XVIII - beginning of XX century: Theodore Rokotov, Sylvester Shchedrin, Alexander Kiselev, Konstantin Makovsky, Gregory Myasoedova, Ilya Repin, Alexei Savrasov, Boris Kustodiev. Many of these works come from collections VP Sukachev. Presented «Portrait of an officer Semenovskaya Life Guard Regiment beginning of the reign of Catherine II» Brushes «Russian Italian» Pietro Rotary Fund was transferred to the museum in 1938 from the Tretyakov Gallery.
