Russian art at auction in new-Йорке
Russian and Soviet painters, rare products of the Imperial porcelain factory, Faberge objects, as well as outstanding works of European, Asian and American artists — in the spring auction Shapiro on March 21-22, 2020
Another auction house Shapiro will be held in new-Йорке on March 21-22. The first part of the auction appointed to March 21, includes more than 400 lots and is entirely devoted to works of masters of Russia and Eastern Europe.
lower Open work of the Russian classic writer Peter Heller "Ivan the terrible and whacky Nicola Salos" made by the artist in 1894 and is estimated at $20-30 thousand, the painting presents the story of the arrival of king John IV in Pskov. In February 1570, after a devastating campaign with the oprichnina troops on Novgorod, Tsar Ivan the terrible moved against Pskov, suspecting in treason and preparing for him the fate of Novgorod. Hearing of the approach of the king, residents took to the streets, and each family was kneeling at the gate of his house, holding the bread and salt. According to legend, they saw the king softened, and he went to Trinity Cathedral, where he wished to receive a blessing from the blessed Nicholas nicknamed Salos. When the king came to the cell of the blessed, the cursed and the king, instead of bread and salt, offered him a piece of raw meat. Hearing the answer John that he doesn't eat meat during lent, a Holy fool reproached: "You drink the blood of man." After that, Salos told the king to stop the killing and to leave Pskov. Convicted of crimes, the terrible ordered to stop the looting and returned to Moscow.
This story is ambiguously depicted on his canvases famous Russian artists, including Andrei Ryabushkin, Ivan Pelevin. Almost identical, but smaller copy of the submitted lots were made by the artist Gregory Myasoedova a few years later, in 1899.
Geller's Work is notable for the fact that was exhibited at the world exhibition 1904 in St.-Луисе. Russia officially withdrew his participation in the exhibition from-за Russo-японской war, however, the Russian fur trader and member of the organizing Committee for Russia's help with the exhibition Edward Grunwald received permission to continue the exhibition program as a private person. By signing individual contracts with each of the exhibiting artists, Grunwald guaranteed the return of the works at his own expense, if they are not sold. Despite the promise, in 1905, the collection of unsold works of Russian artists were sent to new-Йорк, then to Canada and eventually ended up in San-Франциско, where in 1912, was put up for public auction American customs as "unclaimed goods" and it was acquired by the developer from Oakland Frank Havens. In 1916, due to financial difficulties, Havens was forced to sell works to private buyers. Thus the canvas "Ivan the terrible and whacky Nicola Salos" was in the collection of Michael Henry de young, who later handed him over to the Memorial Museum de young San-Франциско. It was later sold by the Museum to a private collection.
Among the outstanding works of other classics of Russian painting of XIX–XX centuries, the auction will feature the works of Nicholas Roerich, David Shterenberg and Alexander Archipenko.
