Chandelier from the Imperial Palace was sold for 600,000 euros

Chandelier of the XVIII century, before hanging in the bedroom of the Empress Maria Feodorovna in the Pavlovsk Palace, was sold yesterday at Christie's auction in Paris with twice the estimate

Lot, inherited a buyer from Europe, features an outstanding provenance: the chandelier was put up for auction from a private French collection of descendants known collector Bemberga Georges (1892-1970). According to research by art historian Emmanuel Dyukampa, in the early twentieth century the Bolsheviks during the sale of objects from the imperial residences chandelier purchased Georges Bemberg, grandson of the industrialist. As an artist, Bemberg from early youth was friends with Pablo Picasso, and later became the godfather of his firstborn Fields. Two friends share a love for Russian culture and Russian wives. After the death of his first wife Bemberg Vyrubova married Mary, who bore him three daughters: Maria, Olga and Irene, from the collection of the latest fixture and put up for auction.

Chandelier attributed to Johann Zehu, work which enjoyed great popularity in St. Petersburg in 1790-ies. After his chandelier was purchased for the rooms of Grand Duke Alexander Pavlovich in the Winter Palace, the Cabinet of His Imperial Majesty has ordered Zehu eight chandeliers to decorate the Throne Hall.

known that in 1798-1801 by order of Paul I, who wanted to create in the Mikhailovsky Castle stressed ambiance, Zeh produced a total of 21 chandeliers. After Paul's death in 1801, his wife Maria Feodorovna left St. Michael's Castle, and the chandeliers were redirected to a different residence (the Winter Palace, Gatchina, Tsarskoe Selo and Pavlovsk). Thus, this chandelier from the Pavlovsk Palace, most likely, is one of those that Zeh produced for the Mikhailovsky Castle. Until the early twentieth century, she graced the bedroom of Maria Feodorovna at the Pavlovsk Palace.
