Jackson’s International auction house (Cedar Falls, Iowa) will hold a spectacular two-day auction on October 26th–27th

The catalogue of the auction comprises of rich collection of Imperial Russian and European Militaria and Decorative Art, collection of Chinese decorative arts, American and European Works

On October 26th and 27th, Jackson’s International will play host to a spectacular two-day auction at their headquarters in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The auction offers over 1,000 lots and features the Dr. Brad LeMay collection of important Imperial Russian and European Militaria and Decorative Art (day one). Day two features an important collection of Chinese decorative arts including carved jade and export porcelain as well as Important American and European Works including paintings, bronzes, glassware, porcelain and furnishings, most from two large Midwest collections.

Day one of the sale will feature the impressive collection of Dr. Brad LeMay. Assembled over a twenty year time span and acquired from all the leading dealers and auction houses worldwide, the emphasis of Dr. LeMay’s collection was Imperial Russian militaria as well as some Imperial European militaria, along with Russian decorative arts. His collections, well known amongst fellow enthusiasts, include many rare specimens such as a spectacular Imperial Russian Horse Guard Regiment helmet with double headed eagle finial, together with a Horse Guards regiment tunic and cuirass.

The LeMay collection is comprised of over 400 individual lots including over 50 Imperial Russian and European military uniforms as well as over 50 various Imperial Russian and Imperial European military (Prussian, German, Bavarian, French and English) hats and helmets, including some rare and hard to find specimens. Also of interest to military collectors will be the over 100 Imperial Russian orders, medals, badges, insignia and medallions that Dr. LeMay amassed, including a named cased Breast Star and Cross of the Order of St. Stanislav along with a cased Breast Star and Medal of St. Anne First Class.

There will also be over 50 Imperial Russian photographs featuring Tsar Nicholas II. These groupings include military reviews and coronation images by Court photographers Karl Bulla and Karl Hahn. Also selling will be a set of four bound volumes of Antiques of the Russian State along with other printed material including coronation items.

Over 100 pieces of Russian silver and enamel decorative arts representing all the major makers such as Faberge, Ovchinnikov, Khlebnikov, Sazikov and the Artels will be offered including a fine Faberge silver Imperial Russian military related presentation dish, dated Moscow circa 1900. Also included are enameled boxes, cases, tea sets, trays, kovshi and flatware. Silver and enamel pieces will be well represented in this auction and include a Feodor Ruckert kovsh, Moscow 1899–1908 and a large and impressive tea caddy with maker’s mark for Lubavin, along with several other fine pieces. Imperial Russian porcelain is also featured with over 75 items such as an Imperial Porcelain Factory bowl and plate from the Kremlin Service, period of Nicholas I. Also coffee and tea services, Imperial presentation Easter eggs, figurines and more.

There will be over 40 Russian icons on day one of this sale including those with silver gilt and enameled riza. Some examples include a pair of Royal Doors from an iconostasis, circa 1890, depicting The Annunciation scene in the upper register and below the Four Evangelists, measuring 53 inches x 16 inches (134.5 x 40.5 cm) each. Also being offered a large and impressive Russian icon of the Old Testament Trinity, 18th century, measuring 26 inches x 23 inches (66 x 58.5 cm) and a large and imposing Russian icon of the Crucifixion, circa 1890, measuring 41 inches x 33.5 inches (104.25 x 85 cm). Plus many other interesting examples including Palekh School.

The larger of the two sessions, the second session with over 650 lots, includes important American and European Fine and Decorative Art as well as the previously mentioned Asian works.

The Oriental collection in this sale comes to us from two estates, one being the Ronald Prosser estate, the other a private Midwestern collection. There will be over 300 lots of Oriental including a large offering of carved Chinese jade, ranging from Archaic to early Republic, carved ivory, Chinese export porcelain, snuff bottles, cinnabar, cloisonné and other items. Some highlights include a Chinese carved white jade Lohan from the 18th century of a seated meditating Lohan with a young tiger cub. This piece is finely carved and well polished raised on a gilt bronze enameled plinth with diaper pattern and scrolled decoration, 4 inches (10.5 cm). Also, a very fine Chinese carved white jade handled Hu shape vase and cover, 19th/early 20th century, finely carved in translucent white jade with foliates and birds under elephant head handles with suspended rings and the cover with incised seal marks highlighted in gilt, standing 9.25 inches (23.5 cm).

Perhaps one of the most interesting groups of items to come out of this Midwestern estate was a group of over a dozen Taj Mahal school watercolors of unusually large size, showing different views of the Taj and monuments within. Found bound in a portfolio emblazoned “Agra”, these meticulously created watercolors are all circa 1800-1815 and are exemplary of the scrupulous detail that was executed by this school of artists.

Along with Oriental works, there is a plethora of American and European paintings and bronzes to be sold, most by well-listed artists. Selling will be a wonderful Dale Nichols landscape portraying a picturesque winter snow scene with barn and sleigh that Nichols is so well known for; and a charming Granville Redmond California landscape, among many others. Several well listed bronze artists will be on this sale including Picault, Dubois, Waagen and Carrier-Belleuse. European painters will also be represented including an Antoine Blanchard Paris street scene and several lovely works by Austrian artist Hans Zatzka including a breathtaking depiction of two semi-nude water nymphs as well as a peaceful Charles Leickert oil on canvas depicting skaters on a frozen canal.

Some modern artists will also be represented on this sale including an important fresh to the market Plexiglas sculpture by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946) that was exhibited at both the Harvard Art Museum (FOGG) and the San Francisco Museum of Art as well as other modern works by sculptors Augustin Cardenas, Leonard Nelson and Georges Laurent.

This sale will also feature some spectacular European decorative arts, including examples from the Virginia Murray estate, including an extremely fine gilt bronze and marble “dragon slayer” handled campagna urn from the 19th century, in the style of Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751–1843). Also included in the European works are some spectacular clocks such as a French Louis XVI period marble and gilt bronze columnar clock from the late 18th century, measuring 27.5 inches (70 cm) and a large and magnificent Tiffany & Co. gilt bronze crystal regulator clock, 19th century, height 31.5 inches (80 cm).

There is a fine grouping of sterling silver to be sold including a Hector Aguilar 73-piece Mexican sterling and rosewood flatware set, Taxco circa 1955, in the Aztec pattern with rosewood handles terminating in stylized volutes. Also a fine Gorham sterling silver figural pitcher, circa 1887, with repousse chased anthropomorphic face of a bearded sea serpent, probably by William Tomey. Wallace “Grand Baroque”, tea sets and other items will also be crossing the block during session two.

Porcelain will also be well represented in this sale including pieces by Meissen, KPM and a wonderful collection of Nymphenburg blanc de chine figurines. Two pairs of impressive urns, including an extremely fine pair of Royal Vienna style lidded urns (34 inches) and a pair of large Sevres gilt bronze mounted urns (42.5 inches) will be offered. Several large Meissen figural groupings will sell including “Peace”, “School for Love” and “Capture of the Tritons”. Also KPM plaques and three hand painted ceramic plaques depicting lovely Seville scenes by Spanish artist Ramon Alorda Perez (1848–1899).

Tiffany lighting and other Tiffany items from an amazing private Midwestern collection will also sell on day two including a bronze and favrile glass ten-light lily lamp, a Tiffany turtleback lamp, a Tiffany three-light lily lamp and a damascene Tiffany desk lamp. A 20.5 inch gold favrile jack-in-the-pulpit Tiffany vase will also be offered along with a plate, bowl and other Tiffany vases.
