«Manifesto of Surrealism» for sale in Paris
The only known complete copy of «Manifesto of Surrealism» was sold on Wednesday for 1.9 million euro
The only known complete copy of «Manifesto of Surrealism», the most important document for the history of art of XX century, was sold under the hammer at the Paris auction house Sotheby's offices on Wednesday for 1.9 million euros.
21-page brochure with an autograph of the author - André Breton - was originally estimated at 300-500 thousand euros. «Manifesto» is written and published by Breton in 1924. At the auction, he got as part of the collection of books and manuscripts, which belonged to the widow of Simon Breton Kollinet. At the Paris auctions exhibited an additional eight items from the collection Kollinet.
In «Manifesto» Breton defined surrealism as «pure psychic automatism, with a view to express, or orally or in writing, or otherwise the real functioning of thought».
