Canvas stolen Caravaggio
From the Odessa museum have stolen Caravaggio painting «Taking Christ into custody, or the Kiss of Judas»
painting by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio «Taking Christ into custody, or the Kiss of Judas» stolen from the Odessa Museum of Western and Oriental art. Thief broke a window on the second floor of the museum and made cloth from the floor, the «Kommersant-Ukraine», with reference to the press secretary of the Odessa City Department of Internal Affairs Tatiana MPs.
On Wednesday 30 July, the museum was a public holiday. Investigators believe that the theft occurred between 18 hours Tuesday, July 29, and 10 am Thursday, July 31, writes RIA Novosti. Missing Caravaggio work was discovered on Thursday, the museum announced sanitary day, to allow investigators to work.
«Taking Christ into custody» dates from approximately 1598 a year. Odessa picture is one of the options written by Caravaggio at the turn of XVI and XVII centuries: a well-known version of this canvas is a 1602 and is kept in Dublin, the Irish National Gallery.
At the beginning of XX century, the work of Caravaggio, first belonged to Grand Duke Vladimir, was a gift from Odessa Art School, from which came the collection of the Museum of Western and Oriental art. The authenticity of the painting was installed in 1950. In 2006, «Taking Christ into custody» restored Kievskie experts.
