The Rodin Museum in Paris sell bronze sculpture to cover the losses
Sales of limited edition castings of the works of Rodin, the Museum plans to earn not less than €3 million a year
A new initiative of the Museum 7 July 2020 said in an interview with the Associated Press, its Director Kathryn Savio. In its opinion, sale of castings from the marble original of Rodin will be able to cover the shortfall of the budget of the Museum, which currently amounts to €3.4 million.
the Idea to sell bronze copies of marble sculpture originals Rodin was proposed by the sculptor as a model of self-financing of the Museum. According to his order, the Museum has the right each year to produce and sell up to 12 copies of his sculptures. These copies are made in specialized workshops under the control of the Museum and can be purchased in art galleries, collectors and museums. The price of one such casting can range from €50 thousand to €1 million In the last 100 years, the Museum sold a total of 5 thousand such works.
In 2020, revenues from the sale of the bronze sculpture has already reached more than €1.4 million, however, in the current situation, the money Museum is not enough. "From year to year during the last three years, the position of the Museum is complicated: first there were protests of "yellow jackets", and then — strikes this year — crisis from-за coronavirus", — commented on the situation of Savio.
To eliminate the budget deficit the Museum plans to expand the list of available casting works, as well as to make the process more open and to attract a new audience, primarily at the expense of customers in Asia, Latin America and Gulf countries. In addition, part of the bronze casting (the production of which the Museum plans to increase to 120 units per year) are planned to be sold through the gallery level of the Gagosian Gallery or similar.
"Our task is not to sell more and to do it more regularly," — stressed Savio. Because "in some years we sell a sculpture for €6-9 million, and some do not sell anything". Now, the Museum expects to receive from the sale of bronze at least a third of the required annual budget of the Museum — €3 million a year.
