ARTinvestment.RU   25 февраля 2020

The paragraph on the return of illegally removed cultural objects to their countries of origin or compensation for them will be the subject of negotiations between the EU and the UK

the Mandate for the negotiations between the EU and the UK — document, establishing the basic position of the European Union in the forthcoming negotiations on the terms of "Breccia". The negotiations, which reported, will be held in March 2020, will need to determine the position of the UK and Europe on major issues, including transparency of financial cooperation, cooperation in the medical field in terms of a possible pandemic and, among other things, the trade relations. In addition to General positions in the mandate of each of the 27 European Union countries have the chance to add your own terms of business with the UK. So Spain declares its claims to the territory of Gibraltar in the Mediterranean sea, France requires conditions on the rights to fishing and Greece concerned with the possibility and conditions of restitution of cultural property, including the marbles of Lord Elgin.

the Elgin Marbles — collection of ancient sculptures, brought by the British Ambassador in Constantinople Lord Elgin from the Acropolis of Athens in London in the years 1802-1812. At that time Greece was under the control of the Ottoman Empire, to the representatives of the ancient marbles which special values are not represented. In 1816 the collection of ancient Greek marbles were for £35 thousand purchased from Elgin by the British government and placed in the British Museum. Since then, for nearly two centuries, from the earliest years of the restoration of the Greek state, Greece is trying to return the collection itself.

Previously, according to publication Bloomberg, the official representative of Greece denied that the main task of a restorative item is the start of the process of returning from Britain to Greece of the Parthenon and other marbles of Lord Elgin. According to him, the inclusion of restitution in the draft mandate contributed to the frequent detection of auctions of London lots of ancient art with questionable provenance. It is possible that after the adoption of this paragraph in the final document, the British Museum will have to bid farewell to one of the world's greatest collections of antique sculpture.

And while the official representatives of the British government claim that "it just can't happen", it seems that Greece still has a chance to emerge victorious in this centuries-old dispute.
