Five works of old masters, stolen, exactly 40 years ago, was returned to German Museum
The largest ever theft of art in Germany occurred in 1979. Among the stolen works were paintings by van Dyck, Brueghel and Holbein
On the return of the paintings to their walls last Friday reported Spiegel Online. According to the publication, all the paintings are currently in the research laboratory of the state Museum of Berlin, where since the end of September the professionals determine the authenticity and assess the condition of the work.
stolen was preceded by years of negotiations with a certain lawyer involved in the "legalization" of objects with a dubious provenance. It is known that photographs of stolen works, namely — copies of Rembrandt paintings, "the old Man" painted by Jan Levenson; "Portrait of an unknown gentleman with a hat and gloves" work of Frans Hals and workshop; "Katarina" Holbein; "Village street with carts and cows" Bruegel-старшего and "self-Portrait with a sunflower" by van Dyck (copy of self-portrait made by the artist himself) — lawyer demanded € 5.25 million was not granted: December 5, police in Germany raided offices and homes of suspects in which was discovered evidence of their involvement in the case. The attorney and his client — to the owner of the photos and part-time doctor of the East Frisian — charged with extortion and theft.
