The Australians saw a hidden portrait under the work of Degas
With the help of new technologies has been received the image of a girl — presumably known at the time of model Emma Daubigny
that portrait of an unknown woman from the collection of the National gallery of Victoria (Melbourne, Australia) hides another picture, knew long ago, but only today's technology has allowed to obtain it without damaging the work. Australian scientists used x-ray fluorescence analysis to obtain a complete elemental composition of the paint layer, and it helps to determine what color pigments were applied by the artist.
the Result was a fairly accurate reconstruction of the hidden portrait. Critics argue that Degas portrayed Emma Daubigny — famous model and heroine of his earlier portraits (about 1869). Why the artist decided to record her this portrait, created circa 1876-1879., is still unknown. Presumably, the work spent a few years in his Studio before he decided to write over it another picture.
