To do this, he often shared the image on different-sized bands, which when converted into replication independent works. On the outcome of this creative experiment can be seen in the artist's new book «Patterns»

German artist Gerhard Richter is deservedly famous for its countless "abstract paintings", which he created by scraping layers paint large canvases spatula-sized car bumper. But this obviously requires great physical effort occupation seems tired old artist, and he decided to experiment with one of his "abstract paintings" without leaving your computer desk. The result of this creative pursuit can be seen in the book «Patterns» («Patterns"), went on sale a limited edition of 800 copies (200 of them signed by the author).
First Richter took his "Abstract painting (724-4)" in 1990, and cut it into two vertical lines (not literally, of course, but only on the computer.) Next each half he flip, and then put in a series of multiple copies of the resulting abstract images in the style of Rorschach test. So one of two abstract paintings turned out to see a repetition of the pattern elements. In the next stage the same picture he divided into four parts, and then to each of the bands to rejoin her mirrored and multiplied. It happened four new pattern. At each successive stage of dividing the number of bands increases exponentially: they were, respectively, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048 and 4096. Richter got just 8190 different size bands, each of which has the above described algorithm is easily turned into a pattern. The narrower the band grew, the homogeneity and smaller out pattern. So, on the 12th stage of the division (4096 pieces) bandwidth was only 8 millimeters. When it came out replication pattern of horizontal colored stripes. Richter chose to book 221 most successful pattern, and each of them took their turn landscape. Artist of this book fully proved that beauty can be created through a simple system of mirrors and replication.
