In late 2010 made a generous gift Berlin-wife Ulla and Heiner collectors Peach (Ulla and Heiner Pietzsch): they promised to leave the city its famous collection of of art. The agreement signed by both parties in 2010, says about 150 works worth about 120 million euros. This is a product of the Parisian surrealists and abstract expressionists of the New York schools and other areas - paintings by Max Ernst, Rene Magritte, Joan Miro, Salvador Dali, Paul Delvaux, Jackson Pollock, Ed Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and others.
However, this was a huge vat of honey and a little fly in the ointment: donors are insisting that their collection is exhibited not just anywhere, but only at the Berlin Art Gallery ( Berliner Gemäldegalerie) alongside other modernist works from the museum collection. Agreement enters into force without this condition.
But the National Gallery is not enough space to expand the exposure of the modernists, without cutting back on art exhibitions of other eras. It was decided that a small part of the famous museum's collection of old masters, which presents paintings by Durer, Titian, Caravaggio, Vermeer and Rembrandt, to send for a while in the Bode Museum. And next to this museum will be built a new wing for the rest, most of the collection of Old Masters from the National Gallery. To build a new wing has allocated 10 million euros, but the earliest date the work is completed - in 2018. Until then, paintings by old masters will gather dust in storage. Many Berliners angered by this state of things and even going to write a collective letter of protest.
