The European Court has enriched relatives of Salvador Dali
According to court decisions, interest from the resale of works of the artist in France, will receive his relatives - but not Spain, which is his sole heir
European Court in Luxembourg ruled that Spain, which owns the rights to the works of the famous surrealist Salvador Dali (Salvador Dalí, 1904-1989), may not receive interest on the resale of his work in France. Requirements of Spain, trying to get royalties since 2005, contrary to French law.
In 2001, the European Union adopted a regulation whereby a portion of profits from the resale must be transferred to heirs. And the only heir of Dali is a Spanish state, which the artist, who died childless, and left all their belongings (including artistic works). In France, royalties may only claim the authors or members of their families, the latter can earn income for 70 years after his death.
