Fourth Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art will take place in September-October 2011. Commissioner and the artistic director of the Biennale, as in previous years, appointed Joseph Backstein.

First Moscow Biennale was held in January - February 2005. It demonstrated the openness of Russia the world's artistic tendencies. First major exhibition of contemporary art in Russia presented the international curatorial team, and participated in the exhibition of contemporary artists from different countries. The names of many of them subsequently became known throughout the world. The main project entitled "Dialectics of Hope" on display at the former Lenin Museum, it included the work of 45 artists. In addition, Moscow was opened about 20 special exhibitions timed to the Biennale. First Moscow Biennale was visited by about 100 thousand people.

Second Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art was held in March 2007. The exhibition, titled "Notes: Geopolitics, Market, and Amnesia", as the first Biennale, preparing a group of international curators. The Second Biennial attended by some 100 artists. The main set was a tower "Federation" in the City and the new building CUM. The main project Biennale and more than 40 special projects 230 thousand people attended.

Third Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art was preparing a curator - Jean-Hubert Martin. The mainly project "Against Exclusion» , which was held at the Center for Contemporary Culture Garage , was attended by 78 artists. As part of the Biennale were shown a record of 50 special projects. The third Moscow Biennale has broken all previous attendance records: only main project visited more than 100 thousand people, forcing organizers to extend the exhibition.

Continuing the successful experience of an invitation to a single curator, organizing committee stopped the Biennale selection Peter Weibel.

Peter Weibel, one of the pioneers of media art and computer art, long time worked together with Valie Export. While serving as curator of "New Gallery" in Graz, he implemented several landmark projects. For several years he was commissioner of the Austrian pavilion at the Venice Biennale. From 1989 to 1994 was Director of the Institute for New Technologies. Since 1976, Waibel taught at many universities around the world, took a professorial position at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.

Moscow Biennale will be the second international biennial led Waibel: in 2008 he oversaw the Third Biennial Seville. In addition, Waibel - curator of such exhibitions as Medium Religion (jointly with Boris Groys) at ZKM, «M_ARS - Art and War" (together with Günther Holler-Schuster) in the "New Gallery», Inklusion: Exklusion. Almost all his projects Waibel special emphasis on the development of the arts in the new socio-economic conditions of globalization of culture and total information society in which art develops the border of the image field and enters the arena of free information space.
