residents and guests of Rome had a unique opportunity to see the very rare creation of Michelangelo da Caravaggio (Michelangelo de Caravaggio) - his only painting, done on the ceiling of one room houses Bonkompani Ludovizi. In 1597 it commissioned the artist to his patron, Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte (Francesco Maria Del Monte), who wished to decorate one room of his suburban home, where he studied alchemy. Caravaggio painted in the shade of Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto. The first is sulfur and air, the second - mercury and water, and the third one - salt and ground. Celestials escorted the sacred animals: an eagle close to Jupiter, sea horse next to Neptune and tricipital dog Cerberus near Pluto.

The uniqueness of this work is partly that the Caravaggio decided to use oil painting paints, which are usually written on the canvas or wood. Because of such a rare technology professionals for a long time were afraid to take up the restoration of the ceiling for fear of damaging him. As a result, painted almost entirely faded.

The work lasted a year, but in the end a masterpiece by Caravaggio once again appeared in its original splendor.
