Yale University is fighting for «Night Cafe» Van Gogh
Grandson of famous Russian collector Ivan Morozov wants to win back a picture of the university
Recently, Yale University issued a lawsuit in Federal Court in the State of Connecticut, asking him to recognize the lawful owner of the famous painting by Vincent van Gogh (Vincent van Gogh) «Night Cafe». Cloth wants to win back Konovaloff Pierre (Pierre Konowaloff), grandson Russian industrialist and collector Ivan Morozov.
Yale University has received the picture in 1961 as a bequest collector Stephen Carlton Clark (Stephen Carlton Clark). Clark bought it in 1933 or 1934 in New York, Knoedler Gallery. Gallery bought the work from the Soviet government, which in 1918 nationalized the assembly Morozov.
painting «Night Cafe», written in 1888, is one of the most famous works of Van Gogh. Pierre Konovaloff said he wants to return to this masterpiece in Russia. It also calls for financial compensation. Konovaloff insists that the nationalization of a collection of his great-grandfather was illegal. But University, in his statement said that it «is not inconsistent with international law».
