Initially, management of the UN planned that a large part of the 270 works in a building on the East River, will be packed and moved to a warehouse, away from construction sites. However, as reported by the American architect Michael Adlershteyn (Michael Adlerstein), who heads the department responsible for carrying out the reconstruction, the payment of insurance for the storage of the collection will cost dearly, as it relates to the transportation of many risks, so it was decided to continue its exhibit. According to Adlershteyna, a collection of art work, in which, in general there are more than 700 works in offices throughout the world, not insured; its the total cost of the architect is not reported.

This year's paintings, sculptures and other artifacts moved to a new, located next to the old temporary building, which was launched last spring. It will accommodate the UN Secretariat, the General Assembly and the executive departments. After the repair the main building will be completed (it is planned to be finished in 2013), this structure, the cost of 149.5 million dollars, will be demolished.

Among the artworks that are at the UN headquarters, there are paintings, tapestries and other items that can be easily moved. But there is a massive sculpture, which is required to transport large appliances, as well as the «real estate» creations - for example, the two abstract panels of the General Assembly Hall, made sketches of the French artist Fernand Leger (Fernand Leger). They lay the plywood, and protection to the repair time.

The majority of works in the collection are devoted to themes of war, UN, peace and harmony. Among them, and the famous «Guernica» Pablo Picasso (Pablo Picasso), made in a tapestry. This work belongs to the Rockefeller family and with their permission exhibited at the UN since 1985, and now she is in a London gallery Whitechapel.
