The fourth largest city in Scotland - Dundee - was recently installed an unusual sculpture. It not only beautifies the neighborhood but also cleans the air ...! It is called «Catalyst» and is made of special concrete, which makes vehicles produced in the exhaust gas oxygen and water-soluble nitrogen, washed by rain, and thus reduces the amount of harmful substances into the atmosphere. This unusual work is done in the form of full-size cars and weighs 13.6 tons. Its authors - Scottish artists Matthew Daltsil (Matthew Dalziel) Skallion and Louise (Louise Scullion), who worked in the creative tandem and call themselves Dalziel + Scullion.

«This material was originally developed for the sidewalks in heavily populated parts of the city - told Matthew Daltsil. - We are very pleased that through our work, it was first used in Britain».

«Cleaning» properties of concrete are determined by the fact that it comprises a catalyst (based on titanium dioxide), which under the action of sunlight destroyed harmful compounds of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur contained in the exhaust.

«Our catalyst shows how in the cities, the notorious high air pollution, such as Los Angeles, Athens or Beijing, you can in the short term to reduce the negative effects of exhaust gas», - said Matthew Daltsil .
