Now the National Gallery in Athens will be on display picture «Coronation of the Virgin», formerly owned by Filipino dictator Ferdinand Marcos

Alexander S. Onassis Foundation (The Alexander S. Onassis Foundation) bought a picture of El Greco (El Greco), which was once owned by Filipino dictator Ferdinand Marcos (Ferdinand Marcos). Jobs returned to the artist's home country - Greece.

In 1986, Marcos was removed from his post as President of the Philippines and fled the country. Twelve years ago, belonged to him the picture of El Greco came to the U.S. government, which decided to sell it at auction.

real name of El Greco (1541-1614) - Domenikos Teotokopulos (Domenicos Theotokopoulos). He was born in Crete, but in 1567 moved to Venice, where he studied with the great master Titian. Then he moved to Rome, and in 1577 moved to Spain, where he became a living in the city of Toledo, the religious center of the country. It was there that he created his most famous works. In the works of El Greco intertwined influence of Byzantine art, Renaissance and Mannerism. His unusual, full of mystical spirituality works, with their elongated figures, are not confused with nothing. In the life of El Greco was a famous painter, but after his death his name was forgotten, and re-opened only at the beginning of XX century, with the emergence of expressionism.

«Coronation of the Virgin» became one of nine canvases by the artist in Greece. It will hold two years in the National Gallery, and then move to a new cultural center which is currently under construction in Athens.

Alexander S. Onassis Foundation, bought the work, was founded in 1973 by shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis (Aristotle Onassis). Billionaire named it in honor of his only son, who died in a plane crash.
