New York: The end of an era?

During the Second World War, namely New York was destined to become the promised land for European artists and intellectuals. After the war, there were born two major areas - abstract expressionism and pop art, who founded what we now call the «contemporary art» - modern art. At the Venice Biennale in 1964 Grand Prix was the first time an American Artist: Robert Rauschenberg was a victory not only his personal achievement, but also a signal to the fact that the focus of world art market has shifted from Paris to the New World.

In the next half century the United States and its engine of New York held steady leadership in the global art market. But that all changed in 2010 when the first by total sales of Chinese art market has surpassed the U.S. (China got 33%of the global auction sales, and the U.S. - 30%). But New York has not parted with its status as the capital market of contemporary art. While the U.S. economy shakes the new wave of the crisis on the New York Contemporary Art auctions are still no end of customers, attracted by some of the current weakness of the dollar.

What will happen to New York in the near future, to anticipate difficult. The world-famous museums (the Guggenheim, the Whitney, MoMA, etc.) and picture (especially in the areas of SoHo and Chelsea) does not lose its appeal. And even some of the events of interest are added Big Apple, for example, the famous London art fair Frieze has got himself a New York daughter (Frieze Fair New York will be held 07/04 May 2012).

New York is able to grow their own superstars of world art scene: Today the native of New York's Jean-Michel Basquiat brought the most revenue in auctions around the world Contemporary (Basquiat led the current Top 10 contemporary artists at auction turnover of money). And in the New York City for 34 works by this artist could fetch 36 million euros (about Basquiat market can be read here ).

For the Basques in the list of most profitable artists in New York lined up Jeff Koons (22.3 million for 26 lots), Richard Prince (13.1 million for 36 works) Christopher Wool (10.4 million for 16 lots), Maurizio Cattelan (9.8 million over 5 lots), Takashi Murakami (7.4 million for 45 lots) and Mark Tansu (5.8 million euros for 4 lots). < /p>

One of the best auction results of the Manhattan brought the Japanese Takashi Murakami. Contribute to its popularity as a certain kinship with his style of Warhol's (the artist himself admits this resemblance), and use objects in the work of Japanese pop culture. Another artist, who played for New Yorkers love to pop art, it's Urs Fischer: his huge sculpture of yellow bear was sold for 4.18 million euros.

Warhol and his successor ... Koons

Experts of the art market is often judged on the situation in the market of postwar and contemporary art as the market works by Andy Warhol (1928-1987). In 2009, when the King of Pop Art were again sold for multimillion-dollar amount, the art community breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that the bad times behind us. In 2010, 33 works by Warhol's got more buyers million euros, with 8 of them crossed the threshold of 5 million euros. In the first half of 2011 successes in the market and Warhol did a phenomenal: as much as 24 seven-digit result, 17 of which occurred in New York. In addition, four papers were sold more 10 million euros. Christie's and Sotheby's auctions typically combine the post-war and contemporary art, and the success of these auctions depends on how you play pop art. For example, Christie's May 11, 2011 earned as much as $ 265 million for such tenders (total upper estimate was 230 million), of which 56 million euros were paid for 9 works by Andy Warhol.

While only contemporary artist, swung in the past year on the results of more than $ 10 million on the New York auction, was Jeff Koons. Since that time, as the purple "flower from a balloon," in June 2008 went under the hammer for 22.9 million dollars, Koons has been recognized as the author of the most expensive Contemporary Art. In the market of an artist of such a level as far as the crisis affects: it works to lose except a few million in value, but certainly not worthless. Thus, the turquoise "Flower from a balloon," November 10, 2010 at Christie's brought $ 15 million (8 less than the purple "Flower" in 2008). Another achievement was the sale of market Koons sculpture "Pink Panther" for $ 15 million. Although Sotheby's and was hoping to make a sculpture in the arms of blonde cartoon character much more than 20-30 million dollars, the result of 15 million is still at least ten times more than the price of this sculpture in 1999: then it was worth 1.65 million dollars. < /p>

Beijing is competing with New York

Beijing art market - the second in the world by sales volume Contemporary Art . In this market dominated by Asian art artists, whose works prices soaring past ten years. The leader of the Beijing art market - the auction house Poly International - planned to open an office in New York, to interest the Chinese art of American clients. Inside Sales Contemporary Art in Beijing Poly International has no equal: for the year (July 2010 - June 2011), it turns modern art totaled 88.22 million euros, which is only 300 thousand euros less than the mighty Christie's receipts for the same period in New York York (88.52 million euros).

Poly International also planned to enter the New York Stock Exchange. This will turn Beijing auction house in an even greater contender for Sotheby's (so far the only auction house in New York City, whose stock is publicly traded). And in terms of sales of modern art in a particular town has managed to circumvent Poly Sotheby's: Beijing office Poly brings more revenue than any of the offices of Sotheby's - London, New York or Hong Kong.

auction house China Guardian, the chief rival Poly International, this year at the Contemporary-art earned 44.1 million euros. The result is a rather modest when compared with the same income from the sale of China Guardian works modern artists: May 22, 2011 only one sheet of Qi Baishi modernist went under the hammer for 40.4 million euros.

Today, the art market in Beijing is competing with the art market in New York in the amount of auction revenue. However, the art market capital of the Middle Kingdom is different from the great market of the Big Apple: firstly, it is dominated exclusively Asian artists, and secondly, there is preference for the works executed in the traditional Chinese techniques such as drawing and painting. In Beijing, the traditional material played as large a role as the object of representation.

Liu Chunsi a young traditionalist

Wealthy collectors Celestial likely will prefer the traditional works of Liu Chunsi (Liu Chunxi), rather than the conceptual creations of Ai Weiwei. In his thirty years of Liu Chunsi absolutely unknown in the West, but his track record is already seven-digit auction results. December 20, 2010 his work brought almost 10 million euros at auction Beijing Beijing CNTC International Auction, six of them have crossed the bar in the works of one million euros. Among them are the most expensive work of the artist - "Divinity" (2.5 million euros). Sales of the works of Liu Chunsi this year brought Beijing CNTC International Auction fifth place in sales of contemporary art in Beijing.

Other Beijing auction houses owe their success to the authors, more commonly known in the West - Chen Ifeyu (Chen Yifei), Idun Wang (Wang Yidong), Liu Xiaodong (Liu Xiaodong), Zeng Fanchzhi (Zeng Fanzhi), Ai Xuan (Ai Xuan), Leung Chun (Leng Jun), Zhou Chune (Zhou Chunya), Ho Tszyainu (He Jiaying) and Y Bean (Wu Bing).

Chen Yifei at the top of Beijing's art market

Over the past year (July 2010 - July 2011) on the art market of Beijing, Chen Ifeya brought nearly 20 million euros, making it the most lucrative contemporary artist in the Chinese capital. In the previous year (July 2009 - July 2010) auction of works of Chen Ifeya turnover in cash was less than half - 8.8 million euros, which, however, allowed the artist Damien Hirst to bypass the 500 thousand euro in the overall rankings of contemporary painters. On account of Chen Ifeya also the most successful result in the whole sector of Beijing's contemporary art sale through May 28, 2011 at the China Guardian of the "Wind of the mountain village" of his new personal record now stands at 7.78 million euros. As well as that of Liu Chunsi, figurative paintings Ifeya performed with excellent knowledge of traditional painting techniques, making them extremely attractive to Asian collectors, less inclined to invest big money in the conceptual work, installations and the like.

Examples of extraordinary popularity of figurative realist painting can continue. Among the most successful artists of this trend - Van Idun, whose auction turnover of money in the past year amounted to over € 14 million (second place among Chinese contemporary authors after Chen Ifeya), and Leung Chun, whose giperrealistichny portrait of a girl in December at the auction Poly International got a new owner for 3.22 million euros.

It seems that the market for contemporary art in Beijing is divided into two areas: on the one hand, it reigns a variety of traditional (or conservative) of authors, which supports extremely wealthy Beijingers and on the other hand, there are artists who gravitated towards non-conformism and international recognition. Among the latter are distinguished Zhou Chunya, Liu Xiaodong and Zeng Fanchzhi whose work «A Series No. 3: Marriage »June 2, 2011 reached a hammer price of 3.7 million euros.
