Dada in Moscow

Interview with the curator and researcher Adrian DADA movement Nottsom

rebel movement Dada with us at home oberiutov, zaum kubofuturizm and could not be perceived as foreign. Even phonetically it is felt that something, dear. And the more incomprehensible that the first exhibition, officially representing the movement in Moscow, took place only now, after 95 years after the publication of the Manifesto in Zurich DADA. Inaugural project - « Rewriting Worlds: Dada Moscow » - Swiss made curator of the "nest of Dada," "Cabaret Voltaire" with the assistance of galleries Barbarian Art and "Triumph". Shortly before the opening, he responded to questions ARTinvestment.RU. Meet Adrian Notts (Adrian Notz) - Dada movement researcher and director of the Cabaret Voltaire on international issues.

Adrian Notts, curator and historian of Dada

ARTinvestment.RU: Let me start with a fine of not the issue curator: what were the criteria for selecting participants in the first project in Moscow?

Adrian Notts: A - Dada. Of course, the main criterion - with the spirit dada. I watched the work of the participants are related to the motion, and pointed out what works by Russian and international participants resonate with the work of key figures of Dada. For example, the work of Russian artist Kawarga mysteriously resonate with "thinking space", with works by Hans Arp, his biomorfizmom. In the Slovenian artist Vadim Fishkin has attracted a simple gesture, the use of everyday materials and creating some sort of psychological situations. But what would have been other factors, the main criterion - it's dada.

AI: Is it true that Dada in Europe developed in close connection with the ideas of Russian avant-garde that emerged a little earlier? Can we call our and Burliuk , and Khlebnikov, Kharms dada predecessors?

EN : If we look at it historically, from a scientific point of view, probably not. Handshaking with the Russian avant-garde Dada that time were not found. Yes, they all worked at one time, but hardly knew a lot about each other. I think that talk about these relationships have contributed to the assumption Tristan Tzara, which he made much later. On the other hand, the founder of the Dada Ball, Hugo was fascinated by ideas . There is evidence that certain groups of the Dadaists were familiar with the art of machine and inspired them. But the direct cultural exchange, most likely, no.

AI: It's a pity. So, the dialogue with the Russian avant-garde - is a myth? At best, the bike, like Lenin with a balalaika in "Cabaret Voltaire»?

EN : Not that story. Just dada - it's not some kind of centralized movement, which enforces a certain style in the field. There comes to Dada, often already formed their own cultural traditions, and dada only gives it a word. For example, working in New York, Duchamp, Picabia, Man Ray did not consider themselves Dadaists, and only later they began to reckon in this direction. History will judge that their art was part of Dada. Thus, the Russian avant-garde ideas and were often in tune with Dada - and some concepts are mixed. Now, too, is often referred to Dada artists, who do this and not know it. It was more a question of stylistic affinity, special decorative element.

AI: In a recent interview to a number of well-known contemporary Dadaist you have ranked Lady Gaga. Why?

EN : Well, it is read even by name - Gaga and dada . And in the work she uses the same references to the art of performance, to surrealism. It carries the ideas of contemporary culture, and emphasizes the realities that resonate with Dada - for example, the culture of social networking. Gaga personifies the trend. By the way, at the dawn of the motion at Dada Dada, had a Baroness - Elsa von Freytag eccentric-Leringhoven.

AI: A general who decides that a particular artist belongs to Dada?

EN : In particular, I like a man versed in Dada, I determine that the creativity of the artist belongs to Dada. Yes, we have a plan in the near future to introduce a kind of rite of initiation into the Dadaists. But we can not say that only we take over the function of selection. If an artist feels like the Dadaists, he can come in and say so - if he needs Dadaist blessing. Will anyone refuse? I imagine it is still difficult. Still, Dada means "yes" and not "no-no».

AI: How is the idea give Dadaist ten thousand dollars for the baby, whose parents will be called the name of Dada?

EN: The idea of stock GUGUSDADA - to bring the ideas of Dada in everyday life in society. In Russia, we have failed to find a suitable candidate. Interest was low. And in Switzerland is already growing boy by the name of Dada, his 6 years. It is interesting that his father - a Nigerian and a dialect of his tribe, the word "Dada" means "prince." Why it has not worked in Russia - I'll never know. Maybe it's because here prefer to call the babies in a limited range of traditional names: Alexander, Natasha. And maybe, while few people know it. On the other hand, it is also the result of: not named, and well.

AI: Young art is experiencing a crisis of identity and new ideas. Roughly speaking, the artists are more difficult to define who they are. In Dada feel these processes?

EN: This is a crisis not only in the young art, this general trend. Say, now, just look back and determine who belonged to what direction: who the surrealists, futurists and others who - in retrospect, everything is clear. And if you try to figure out who is who, here and now, it's always much more difficult.

AI: What do you think about the future of Europe in light of the crisis of multiculturalism? What might be a way out of this situation.

EN : B back out - this is Dada. Dada in fact in itself is very multicultural. This fusion of German, Romanian, Catholic, Jewish and other cultures. And dada - it's decision in the sense that it can accommodate the complexity of multiculturalism. But I think the question about something else: would not a crisis of multiculturalism to the victory of nationalism? Already, it's complicated. I spoke with another Pole, and he said that a number of features reminiscent of the mood in society, those that were before the Second World War. Nationalists and radicals, and we have in Switzerland. But the difference is that society is now able to respond quickly to these symptoms. My prediction is this: will the fanatics and radicals, but the war will not.
