the Son Ф. Гуна, teacher, and Church organist-приходской school Sisaala, also engaged in wood carving. Graduated from Riga dome Cathedral school in Riga. From 1850 he worked in Petersburg in the artist's Studio-литографа В. Г. Папе where participated in the execution of the illustrations for the publications of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

in 1852 he attended evening drawing classes of the Imperial Academy of arts. Was a volunteer IAH (1854-1861) in the class of historical painting in П. В. Басина. For student work awarded to small (1855, 1857, 1858) and large (1855, 1858) silver medals. In 1860, for the painting "Scenes from the Olympic games. Pugilism" received a small gold medal in 1861 for the program "the Grand Duchess Sophia Vitovtovna pulls the belt from Prince Vasili Squint at the wedding of Vasily II the Dark" — a gold medal; graduated from the Academy with the title of class artist 1-й degree and the right of a pensioner's travel abroad.

In 1861 состоял assistant teacher of drawing in plaster class of the Imperial Academy of arts. In 1862-1863 совершил trip to Yelabuga, Vyatka province, where, together with В. П. Верещагиным worked on icons for the local Church. In 1863-1872 — pensioner of the iakh; lived mainly in France (Paris, vel). The advice П. Делароша. Also visited Austria, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Spain.

In 1868, for the painting "the Eve of St. Bartholomew's day massacre" was awarded the title of academician, and in 1871 for the painting "Scene of the massacre of St. Bartholomew", "Italian" received the title of Professor 2-й degree. In 1873, for the painting "Children with kittens" (1869) was awarded a gold medal М.-Л.-Э. Виже-Лебрен "for the expression".

From 1871 lived mainly in St. Petersburg and Latvia. In 1872 traveled to Nizhny Novgorod, Kama and Simbirsk provinces. In 1874-1877 he lived in France, Latvia, Austria, Italy, Switzerland. In 1876 in connection with the condition at their own request, dismissed from the service as Professor of the Imperial Academy of arts.

he Worked as a genre painter, historical painter, landscape painter, portraitist; was engaged in religious and monumental painting. Author paintings: "Portrait of the writer Marko Vovchok" (1863), "In the vicinity С.-Преста in France" (1865), "Russian peasant wedding" (1866), "the Sick child" (1869), "a Visit to Charles IX of dying Coligny" (1870), "Italian courtyard" (1871), "Scorned (a Scene from rural life)" (1872), "haymaking" (1872), "Celebrating 200-летнего anniversary of Peter I" (1872-1873; together with А. П. Боголюбовым), "Gotcha!" (1875) and others. Many worked in watercolor; tried his hand at etching and lithography, in particular executed four etchings by his own paintings ("the Eve of St. Bartholomew's day massacre", "haymaking", "Sloboda near Pechersky monastery", "a Study of an old man") for illustrated catalogue 2-й exhibitions TPHV (1873).

From 1859 — participated in exhibitions. Member TPHV (1871-1877, with breaks; member since 1873). He exposed his works at the exhibitions of the Imperial Academy of arts (1859-1873, with interruptions), at the Paris Salon (1866-1877, with interruptions), the international art exhibition in London (1872), World exhibitions in Vienna (1873) and Paris (1878).

Posthumous exhibition of the Hun was held in 1878 in St. Petersburg; retrospective was organized in Riga (1950, 1977, 1981).

Work is represented in many Museum collections, including the State Russian Museum, State Tretyakov gallery, the Pushkin Museum im. А. С. Пушкина Latvian national Museum of art and others.
