he spent his Childhood in Omsk, 1910-х together with the family moved to Barnaul. He received his artistic education in the Studio Е. Л. Коровай in Barnaul (1917-1918, 1920), School of drawing and painting А. Н. Клементьева in Omsk (1919).

Under the influence of lectures Д. Д. Бурлюка in Omsk was fascinated by Cubo-futurism. In 1921, together with В. И. Уфимцевым and Б. С. Шабль-Табулевичем organized futuristic literary-художественную group "Chervonnaya Troika". Created retrospectivity also work close aesthetics "World of art".

In late 1921 he moved to Moscow to study at VKhUTEMAS, but was not adopted. Took part in the competition for the decoration of the Theater of Military satire. Returned to Omsk. From late 1922 to July 1923 he worked as an artist in the West-Сибирском regional Museum; executed drawings of exhibits for the Department of Ethnography, worked on sketches for murals for the hall in the new Museum building.

In 1923, together with В. И. Уфимцевым received a mandate for a trip to Turkestan from the society for the history of Western Siberia at the Museum to explore the land, perform sketches and collecting exhibits for the Museum. In the same year he moved to Samarkand. Worked in the Commission for the protection of ancient monuments and art. In 1924 he married the artist's daughter Д. К. Степанова and with his family went to Italy.

he Lived in Rome. In 1926-1930 he attended the Academy of З. Липиньского; studied classical art, copied in museums. Influenced by the the current "novocento". Member of the exhibition Association "Fiamma" ("Flame"). Held a personal exhibition in Rome (1930), participated in 1-й International exhibition of colonial art in Tripoli (1931). Was involved in designing the Soviet pavilion for the Milan International exhibition of modern decorative art (1930).

In 1932 returned to Russia; lived in Moscow and Leningrad. Wrote the fantastic scenery, and fabulous symbolic compositions and portraits. Author of painting works: "the Pirate" (1948), "Paradise", "the Girl and the bandit" (both — 1950-е), "Pygmalion and Galatea" (1960); series of works on the theme of the circus (1930-е) and others. Works 1930-60-х close to the aesthetics of primitive art: for them is characterized by accentuated theatricality, the brightness of color, the inclusion in the composition of exotic motifs, stylized in the spirit of Oriental art. The artist resorted to complex classical multilayer technique of painting with glazes.

To earn money he worked as an artist-реставратором in the Association "Vsekohudozhnik", Museum of political prisoners in Moscow, a restorer in the Hermitage, an artist at the Mint in Leningrad. Was engaged in illustrating children's books.

In 1934 he was arrested for anti-Soviet propaganda, was sentenced to five years penal-трудовых works and sent to serve his sentence in Pyatigorsk; there designed the sanatorium of the NKVD.

At the beginning of the great Patriotic war called up for military service, but as "nesterovic" aims to work as a painter of propaganda station in Kovrov.

In 1948 he moved to Saratov. He taught drawing at the Department of architecture of Institute of Road traffic.
