KARPOV Stepan Mikhailovich

Stepan Karpov studied in Kazan Art School (1905–1911); his teacher was N. I. Fechin. In 1911–1917 Karpov studied in the Higher Art Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under the Imperial Academy of Arts (IAKh). In 1921–1922 he studied in Petrograd State Free Art Workshops (PGSKhUM), under the guidance of D. N. Kardovsky and G. R. Zaleman. Stepan Karpov was awarded the IAKh prize for his paintings Nero fishing (1912) and The Pirates (1913).

Karpov lived in Orenburg, since 1922 he lived in Moscow. He worked as a historical painter. He created paintings on the revolutionary history and Soviet life. He was one of the organizers of the art studio and Orenburg Museum of Local History. Karpov was a chairman of the Union of artists in Orenburg. Since 1916 he participated in different exhibitions. In 1924 he became a member and exhibitor of the Association of the artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKhRR). His works were shown in the exhibition Red Army (1923), the Exhibition of works of Art by the 10th anniversary of the October Revolution (1928), the First traveling exhibition of painting and drawing in Moscow (1929), the 14th and 17th International exhibitions of fine arts in Venice (1924, 1930), the Exhibition of the Association of the artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKhRR) at the industrial art exhibition in Cologne (1929) and others.

Works by Stepan Karpov are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, Orenburg Museum of Fine Arts and others.
